The talk discusses about the differences in the findings of research in social sceinces vs. what businesses are doing to motivate the workers and enhance productivity at workplace. It shows how the carrots and stick approach of getting the work done by the employees at the workplace does not work anymore. The findings show that the award / incentive based motivation for doing great work actually led to poor work performance at the wokplace. It is particularly truee for the tasks that involved critical application of mind and advanced thinking skills to find the solution of tricky problems. This is evident from the findings of many studies conducted by a number of top US Universities and the London School of Economics.
The motivating factors that led to path breaking innovative performances at the work at 21st century workplaces are Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. The Autonomy or providing the freedom to the workers to ideate, plan and think to come up with the best solution has been successfuly used worldwide with great effect in some of the leading and most successful organizations. By giving frredom to the workers, the companies were able to perform very well and came up with great results in relatively lesser time.
The employee can be motivated by allowing them to think freely and letting them unleash their creativity to find novel solutions, allowing them to master the things and take charge, be involved and show them the purposefulness of the work. The incentives will automatically come when the work bears fruit. The drivers of the motivation are the autonomy, result orientation, authority and empowerment and recognition of smaller efforts that lead to something big. These motivating factors often lead to great performances at workplace.
