ASTR 100 Spectrum Extra Credit Writeup Instructions and Example
Hi folks,
Here are the instructions for the spectrum extra credit, due next Thursday, March 5,
at 11:59 PM, just before midnight:
Take a picture of whatever source you are investigating, such as a street light,
headlight, etc. Then, take another picture of the spectrum of that same light. Write
a few sentences describing the spectrum you see and what kind of spectrum you
think it is. Compare your spectrum with the spectra you took of the four gases
(emission spectra) and the cove projector (continuous spectrum). It is really
important that you give your best estimate of what type of spectrum you have –
emission, continuous, or absorption. Do that for three other sources and put it all in
one .docx or pdf document. Don’t forget to put your name, the date, and your
astronomy class, at the top of your document! Email that to me by next
Thursday, March 5, at 11:59 PM. I’m including an example of what I mean.
If you are incorrect about your assumption, that is OK, you will still get the 10
points. The point is to take some data, analyze it and see what your results tell you.
You are doing Citizen Science! Involve your family, spouse, kids etc and have fun
doing this.
Here is an example of what I want. This report does not have the student’s name on
it to protect his/her privacy, but don’t forget to put your name at the top of the
report.
Your name, date, and the astronomy class, ASTR 100, goes at the top of your
submission.
These photos are of a small candle light. The second photo has a Continuous Spectrum
where the purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red blend from one color to the next.
These photos are of a light inside my oven. At first I thought the second photo had
continuous spectrum yet if you look closely I believe this has an emission spectrum
because of the bright lines
These photos are of a lamp. They have all colors of the rainbow in single order and has a
Continuous Spectrum.
These two photos are of a light on solar panels that I have connected to my house. You’re
able to see clearly that this has a Continuous Spectrum with only green, yellow, and
orange.
