Discussion: Strategies for Academic Portfolios

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

To Prepare:

• Reflect on strategies that you can pursue in developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.
• Review one or more samples from your own research of resources focused on portfolio development.

Discussion Questions:

Post an explanation of at least two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into your professional development goals. Then, explain how those goals may align with the University’s emphasis on social change. Be specific and provide examples.

For this discussion post, explain 3 concepts you learned about the Reggio Emilia approach. 

Also, explain what is meant by the “Hundred Languages of Children”.

For the first summary assignment for ENG 111, we will have a little fun with summarizing. 

We will summarize video you select from the provided videos. Each of the videos was an educational video, shown in classrooms many years ago. The films were selected because they feature outdated information or societal attitudes or obsolete technology. By virtue of being an educational video, these films were shown in schools; the videos we will see were targeted toward teenagers and older.

The videos to summarize are posted on a separate page. You must access one of those for this assignment to be accepted.

To summarize the videos, consider the following structure: 

Paragraph one — Introduction: What did you watch? 

Objectively introduce the video, including its title, producer, and year of release. Also include an overview of the subject matter. Finally, include a thesis that includes three pieces of evidence to be used in your third paragraph to prove the information is obsolete or outdated. 

Paragraph two — Summary: What was the film about? 

Again, objectively summarize the video. Answer the question above by describing the plot line of the video.

Paragraph three — Identifying: What was out of date in the video? 

Offer three instances of information in the video that is out of date or even obsolete. Consider exploring what kinds of appeals are used to persuade the audience and why they no longer work. 

Paragraph four — Conclude: Where have we been?

Sum up what you have just said. What was the film you watched about? Restate your thesis. What examples did you use to prove that the film was outdated? What could one gain from watching this themselves?

Eating Advice

Instructions:

Clean your plate! Remember there are children starving in other places so do not waste food. Always eat in moderation! Stop eating when you feel full! Your eyes are always bigger than your stomach! 

These are just some examples of the different lessons (advice) shared with children about food and eating. In this post, you are asked to reflect on the guidance you received about eating during your childhood.

Include the following in your reflection:

• What dietary advice were you given as a child?
• Now that you are an adult, what do you think of this advice?
  • Did it help or hurt you?
  • How?
• Consider the process of providing dietary advice.
  • What advice will/did you give your children?
  • What advice would you recommend the parents of young children to share? Include one external reference

  • Does the statement provide good advice or not?
  • What would you say to a parent you overheard offering this advice to their children? Include one external reference

Music- Find a piece or two of instrumental or acoustic music. Ideally the music should be slow in tempo and enjoyable to listen to. Find a quiet place and listen to your music. you should be alone and not working on anything else.  
After you do this for 30 mins discuss the details? Discuss your mood prior to completing the activity. especially note any feelings of stress or tension that were present. Walk Like an Egyptian” was a popular song in the 1980s by the American group The Bangles.  However, this song is not an accurate depiction of ancient Egyptian activity.  Watch the video (below) for the song and do internet research.  Why is this song wrong in its description of how Egyptians walk?  What was Egyptian artwork really showing?  How do you think this song influenced how people outside of the country view the geography of the region?

Family and school represent the primary institutions that structure children’s lives. When family is not able to provide the safety and stability a child needs, that child’s school performance may suffer. Social workers are called to bridge the worlds of school and home with the role of ensuring that families have the support needed for their children to be able to succeed in the academic environment.

To prepare consider the following scenario: Jon, a 9-year-old African American boy, was removed from his home due to maltreatment and placed in a foster home headed by a Caucasian lesbian couple. The social worker is considering permanency planning. The foster family loves Jon and would be willing to adopt him. Jon likes his foster family but wants to return to his biological family. Due to his biological parents’ substance abuse, it is not clear whether or not they will be able to regain custody.

• Explain the developmental and ecological factors that need to be taken into consideration when serving this child and family.
• What might be the role(s) of a social worker in supporting Jon and both his biological and foster families?
