A SWOT analysis includes an organization’s self-assessment of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in their environment as the organization considers a new goal.

• Strengths are those internal factors that are favorable to achieving the goal.
• Weaknesses are internal factors that interfere with achieving their goal.
• Opportunities are external factors that may help the organization attain its goal.
• Threats are external factors that may hinder the organization’s attainment of the goal.

Assume you are part of a four provider Family Practice group, and the practice is considering replacing their existing electronic record with a more robust system in order to meet the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid goal of improving interoperability and patient access to health information (formerly known as meaningful use). The practice has used the current system for 12 years and is not meeting all the requirements for improving interoperability and patient access to health information. Address the weaknesses and threats of a small Family Practice group considering replacing their Electronic Health Record system and conduct a portion of the SWOT analysis for the practice. This page includes personal stories of past drug/alcohol abuse and the challenges that resulted from it. Select a training topic, and develop a training needs analysis and learning objectives as part of your initial training and development program design.

Introduction

For this assessment, you will create the initial design of your training and development program for an organization of your choice, including the selection of a training topic, developing a working needs analysis, and identifying learning objectives.

Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other to form a training and development program, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.

What trainees take away from a training and development program depends on three critical components:

• The trainee’s characteristics: how they learn, what they already know, and their motivation to learn the material being presented.
• The training design: the program itself.
• The work environment.

Since workplace training deals with adults, being well versed on how adults learn is key. There are many theories on adult learning, and they come from a variety of sources including psychology, education, and sociology. Another focus in your program design should be on learning styles. We learn in different ways—some of us listen and some take notes for example—and trainees will learn best when they know the objectives of the program. The outcomes of learning are wide-ranging, including verbal, intellectual, and motor skills, as well as cognitive strategies. To transfer what is learned in the training environment to the job environment, the training needs to be authentic—as real and identical to life and as meaningful (useful) to the trainee as possible.

Preparation

In preparation for this assessment, you are to select an organization to use as the one receiving a new training and development program. (Note: The organization can be real or fictitious.) Consider the needs of the organization to select a training topic, or you may use the Capella library to research training topics.

Requirements

For this assessment complete the following:

• Create a training scenario for your training topic. Consider the following for your scenario:
  • Describe the training topic in general terms (such as improving communications or safety awareness).
  • Why is this training needed?
  • Assess the strategic impact of the training topic on the organization. (Think in terms of the long term impact of the training program.)
• Develop a training needs analysis (TNA) for your topic. (Note: For the purposes of this assessment, you are not expected to actually conduct the TNA. Instead, research your topic using the Capella Library, the Internet, or in meeting with subject matter experts (SMEs) to determine what you want trainees to learn and create the information as if it is based on a TNA.) Consider the following in your analysis:
  • Identify what the trainees know or what they can do before the training.
  • Identify what the trainees should know or be able to do after they have completed the training and development program.
  • Summarize the results of your research or provide a set of the questions you would ask SMEs if you were to meet with them.
• Develop 3–5 specific training objectives for your training topic. (Hint: Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, create your objectives based on what you have determined the trainees should know, or be able to do, after attending the training program.)
  • How would a distance learning module enhance a trainee’s learning experience?

The review of sources and literature is an examination of the state of the field of the Final Project. As the UCF Writing Lab’s definition indicates, “…a literature review surveys scholarly articles, books and other sources … relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each work.” 1

If you are opting for a research papr, for this module’s assignment, you need a minimum of 10 sources, including at least two primary (first-person accounts like interviews) sources and six that are peer-reviewed. Ensure that a significant number of your research sources are published within the last 10 years. In your final submission, you must demonstrate skillful use of high quality, credible, relevant sources to develop ideas that are appropriate for the discipline and genre of the writing.

Use your sources or literature to outline significant discoveries, findings, key concepts and/or theories about your topic or research questions, identify gaps or inconsistencies in research, and future directions. In brief, use the literature to describe the landscape of what’s has been done/researched around your topic.

For this assignment, this does not have to be your complete final draft for your literature review, but should be at least 60-75% of your final literature review and include at least 10 sources as outlined above. If you are doing an alternate project approach, you need to ensure that your project is well-grounded in an integrative multi-disciplinary researched approach as appropriate for your project. You are expected to submit a literature review or annotated bibliography as a foundational document for your project. Depending on the project, your number of sources may vary, but there is an expectation that it is well-grounded in quality scholarly resources from multiple disciplines and includes primary (first-person) sources such as interviews, autobiographical accounts, or TED talks where the speaker shares their own story.  If you need guidance on the expectations as it relates to your particular assignment, please reach out to your instructor via email. 

Students are encouraged to submit their literature review in the format of their final project (use the templateDownload template & submit “Sources & Evidence” & “Work Cited” sections). Be sure to identify which are your primary (first-person) sources & which are your peer-reviewed sources. So, if you are submitting a research papr, you’ll submit a word document here. If you are creating a video presentation, you’ll submit the first few sections of that video (the ones that cover your research) and the accompanying script or annotated bibliography for that section. If you are submitting in another form, you are encouraged to start your project and submit your literature review section of that assignment.

In summary, for this Review of Sources & Literature assignment, you can submit either an annotated bibliography or the “Sources & Evidence” and “Work Cited” section drafts (sections from the final papr template). It does not have to be your final version of the Sources and Evidence section, more like a first draft to which you will add in the coming weeks. Primary sources should be listed in your work cited, but it is perfectly plausible that you have not yet completed all of your interviews or reviewed those resources for inclusion in the “Sources & Evidence” section at this time. Who you plan to interview or the primary sources you plan to use should be included in the work cited section.
