For the Section 2 Discussion Board, I would like you to go back to the pdf on Character in the Section 1 folder.  After you have reacquainted yourself with the terminology discussed there, I would like you to write an analysis of the characters found in the stories we have read in this section.  Are they flat or round?  Stock characters, foils, or sterotypes?  

Once you have identified the characters and explained the reasoning behind your decisions, I would then like you to consider the authors’ style of characterization.  Do they use direct or indirectstyles of characterization?  Both?  Please give properly cited examples from the text to provide evidence for your choices. 

If you are having trouble discerning between direct and indirect characterization, please also see the discussion of “Levels of Meaning” in the pdf on Style in Section 1.  Denotation is when information is given directly.  An example would be if an author told us, “Bill had a terrible temper”.  Connotation is when the information is implied or revealed indirectly.  An example would be if an author provided a scene where we saw Bill stub his toe and everyone around him suddenly went silent and stepped back nervously, implying to the audience that Bill had a bad temper but not telling us directly. 

To get you started, try to consider what the diction, syntax, and dialect of Diaz’s narrator in “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie”, tells us about his character.  The manner in which his narrator speaks to us implies so much about the character that then does not have to be explained directly.

Isabella is expecting her first baby and is very concerned about eating well during her pregnancy. I CHOSE ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES 

In this assignment, you are to assume the role of your chosen global hotel company’s CSR Director.  If you chose a hotel company or cruise line for your Case Study and Final CSR Plan just go with that.  If you chose a restaurant company or something else, you can pick a hotel company to use just for this assignment.  Your assignment is to write an internal corporate memorandum (business memo) to the  General Managers of the individual hotels in the company (or Hotel Managers of all ships in the fleet). As you may know, there is a lot of controversy surrounding corporate philanthropy and non-profit organizations in today’s economy. Several organizations and/or individuals are being accused or actually convicted of embezzlement, money laundering, etc. by taking money from non-profit organizations and putting them into personal funds or hiding money from illegal activities in non-profit funds. Do you think this negative attention will change the way corporations invest in non-profit organizations in the future? If so, how? If not, why not? 

Charity Navigator is one of the best charity watchdog organizations out there and a lot of people and organizations rely on its work to guide them as they decide where to make donations.  Please go to their website (Charity NavigatorLinks to an external site.) and look up the following three charities which by their names tell us that they do the same kind of work.  You may have to register to get deeper into the site but its free.  Take a look first at how many stars they rated each one of these then dig a little more to see some key indicators such as what percentage of donations goes directly to program operations.

State a few facts that you noticed when you looked these up and mention any major similarities and any major differences.

Then look up one non-profit that you are familiar with, where you have either volunteered your time or made a financial donation (e.g. Feeding South Florida, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, March of Dimes, etc.).
