Mr. Smith, a 60 year-old man with coronary heart disease, experienced frequent bouts of angina pectoris. One day while moving a piece of heavy furniture, he experienced excruciating pain over his left chest. He began sweating heavily, became short of breath, and then collapsed. He was transferred to the emergency room at a nearby hospital. Mr. Smith’s EKG was diagnostic of myocardial infarction. A coronary angiography was performed and an occlusion was found in a in the descending branch of the left coronary artery. Intravenous drugs were administered to dissolve the clot that was causing the obstruction. His cardiologist informed him that some of his heart muscle had died as a result of the myocardial infarction.

In research, the dependent variable takes on different values in response to the independent variable. The independent variable is otherwise known as the experimental or predictor variable. It is manipulated in the research to observe the effect on the dependent variable. The value of an independent variable does not rely on other variables as the independent variable can stand alone (Kusurkar, Ten Cate, van Asperen, & Croiset2011).  Using my EBP as an example, the dependent variable in the study is the rate of pressure ulcers in the facility. To measure this, I will need to collect data on the number of pressure ulcers in past three years. This data will help me to monitor how manipulating the independent variables affect pressure ulcer rate which is a dependent variable. The independent variables in this study include nurses’ knowledge about wound care and how effects of protein intake with wound healing. The EBP will manipulate theses independent variables by educating nurses on nutritional impact on pressure wound healing and by implementing extra protein into their daily diet. With a questionnaire, I will be able to collect data on nurses’ knowledge about the topic which help with planning the education and training.

When disaster strikes, community members must be protected. A comprehensive recovery plan, guided by the MAP-IT (Mobilize, Assess, Plan, Implement, Track) framework, is essential to help ensure everyone’s safety. The unique needs of residents must be assessed to lessen health disparities and improve access to equitable services after a disaster. Recovery efforts depend on the appropriateness of the plan, the extent to which key stakeholders have been prepared, and the allocation of available resources. In a time of cost containment, when personnel and resources may be limited, the needs of residents must be weighed carefully against available resources.

In this assessment, you are a member of a community task force responsible for developing a disaster recovery plan for the Vila Health community using MAP-IT, which you will present to city officials and the disaster relief team.

To prepare for the assessment, complete the Vila Health: Disaster Recovery Scenario simulation.

In addition, you are encouraged to complete the Disaster Preparedness and Management activity. The information gained from completing this activity will help you succeed with the assessment as you think through key issues in disaster preparedness and management in the community or workplace.
