100 word reply with references New settings can be unsettling for teachers in much the same way they are for students. Effective classroom management begins with establishing, demonstrating and practicing set routines that will help minimize opportunities for bullying in the classroom. Routines and procedures provide guidance to students as they navigate the daily learning environment and help alleviate some of the frustrations that can arise when momentum is derailed. Having a great system of routines won’t prevent all misbehaviors, students are still imperfect humans who make choices which carry consequences and they learn best through experience. When mistakes like bullying are made, it is best not to react and punish but rather to draw in and educate. Three evidenced based strategies for improving peer relationships are:1. Sulkowski and Simmons (2017) identified that students who have positive teacher-student relationships suffer fewer instances of and effects of peer victimization. Nothing beats establishing a positive relationship with students into which a teach can speak truth and impart wisdom. The challenge can be connecting with every single student, particularly in secondary classrooms when you might see 80-100 students for about 1 hour a day. Nonetheless, having positive interactions will draw students into personal mentorships reducing the likelihood of engaging in aggressor behaviors. I strive to know all my secondary students’ names by the 2nd day of class, greet them in the halls by name and welcome them to class as well as find out interests both in and outside of school. 2. Levine and Tamburrino (2014) identified the success of including feeling statements as part of modeling conflict resolution. I think this is a real valuable strategy, particularly when far too many students are coming from damaged family dynamics and may not have a positive model at home. We can’t expect kids to know how to do something the right way if they have never been shown how to do it. Consistently modeling conflict resolution gives students practical tools to become independent as they gain confidence and competency in expressing how certain words or behaviors make them feel. I modeled this by communicated how I feel when students talk out of turn in class, or modeling how off task behavior makes me feel and asking if there is something I can do to better support them.3. Implementation of an anti-cyberbullying program can be effective in reducing cyberbullying (Tanrikulu, 2018). As the statistics for cyberbullying continue to climb, it is important that students again are made aware of how their actions or words make others feel. Increasing awareness on digital etiquette through implication of anti-cyberbullying programs can have an impact on improving peer relationships. ReferencesLevine, E. & Tamburrino, M.
