English

response to ONE of the following options:

Option 1: Bradford includes the text of the Mayflower Compact in Of Plymouth Plantation (Chapter XI: “The Remainder of Anno 1620”). What type of document is this, and what does it imply about Puritan faith in the written word and divine authority? What does it, or any other part of our readings from Bradford, say about the relationship between church and state?

Option 2: What components make up John Winthrop’s vision the New World, which he articulates in the passage about the “city on a hill”? Why is this vision important to him? to the Puritans? And how do you know?

Option 3: What is Anne Bradstreet’s perspective on religion as compared to William Bradford or John Winthrop? Pay special attention to Bradstreet’s “The Flesh and the Spirit.”

Option 4: According to Cotton Mather, what reasons would the Devil have for being so interested in New England, or, for that matter, Martha Carrier?

Structure

Be sure to use direct evidence from the texts (in the form of examples and direct quotations) to support your response. I expect you to adhere to the conventions of standard English and to follow MLA citation guidelines. Because I want you to strengthen your skills of argumentation (which are based on evidence rather than beliefs or feelings), I ask that you do not use first person in your primary posts.

As a courtesy to your classmates, please aim to have Part 1 completed by Saturday evening.

Part 2

Offer thoughtful feedback on at least 2 of your classmates’ posts. If you can, try to select posts that responded to a question that was different from the one you answered in your post. Your response posts should be 60-100 words in length.
If a classmate has already received 2 responses, please find another classmate’s post that hasn’t.
It’s also nice etiquette to reply back to people who have replied to your main post. A trick I use is to use the “find” button (CTRL-F on a PC, Command F on a Mac) and search my name, and then I can see if others have replied to me so I can reply back. You can also use the “search” box right above the “reply” button in the Discussion. Responding to classmates in this way–even if just to say “Thanks!”–will help us build a sense of community.
