African Americans played an important part in the Union Army during Civil War.They comprised of around 10% of the entire Union army. Most of them were fugitive slaves who worked in different units under White officers. They were initially allowed to work only in labour positions. However, gradually more and more African Americans were put on front lines in combat. African Americans did not enjoy the same perks and benefits as their white counterparts. This difference continued for some time and finally ended in 1864.
During the start of the Civil war, many African Americans volunteered to join the Union army. However, they were not allowed to join because of a 1792 law which prohibited them from bearing arms in the US army. They were finally allowed to join by 1862.
African Americans played a crucial role in the Battle of the Crate during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia and they were also an important part of the Union army during the Battle of Nashville. More than 1,75,000 African Americans served the Union Army. More than 40,000 odd died in the war, a majority of them due to infections or sickness.
African Americans also served in support roles like cook, nurses, blacksmith, spies giving important about Confederate army. However many African Americans also worked in the Confederate army. Here most of them work as slaves or servants.In 1865, a legislation was passed that would free the Africam American slaves if they joined the Confederate army, although the same had to be permitted by their masters.
For both free and slave African Americans, half the battle of the Civil war was to struggle for the right to enter the battlefield. Their biggest victory out of the Civil war was to get their respect. Their heroism in the war made it clear that they were willing to fight. As the war ended, slavery also ended. However, many African Americans still returned to their masters and worked with them. Their celebrations was freedom from slavery and a future which held many promises in front of them
