Explain why it is a leader’s responsibility to “contain” anxiety in an organization. Why do you believe this is important?

The present business environment of the world is highly competitive in nature. With continuous technological advancements and innovative methods of conducting business being introduced by upcoming companies, the market leadership of world’s top organisations is always at risk. In addition to increased competition, organisations also face challenges in satisfying the customers who are now much more informed and knowledgable than ever before. Customers, today, have variety of alternatives with negligible switching cost from one brand to another which has deeply affected a customer’s loyalty towards a particular brand. Customers demand the most superior quality of product or service with no scope of errors and look for high value for money (VFM) that they are paying in purchasing a product or service. In response to aggressive market conditions, more and more organisations are pushing their workers to achieve unpractical sales targets, making them to work for extended hours in an attempt to prevent or increase their market share and to meet project deadlines. At the same time, employees are also advised to abide by the company’s code of conduct, code of ethics and other work policies while conducting their duties or else, they are at the risk of facing strict actions by their employers. Therefore, it is natural for the employees to feel anxious and stressful in their jobs while meeting the challenges of the business ecosystem.
It is the responsibility of the leaders of the organisation to “contain” the anxiety of their employees. These leaders should ensure that they work towards creating a positive organisational culture and a productive workplace environment. In an attempt to protect their market standings, the leaders should not put their employees in uneasy situations where instead of focusing on doing their jobs productively, they have to constantly worry about the unpredictable outcomes. The managers and leaders can take the role of a mentor or guide and instead of delegating work to the sub-ordinates, leaders should focus more on participating in the work related activities, take opinions of the employees, guide them in their work, suggest constructive feedback where ever necessary and stand as a support behind them. When the employees feel that their organisation supports them and values their contribution, it can have positive impact on their efficiency. It is also important for the leader’s to take the responsibility to contain anxiety of their employees as it can prevent the high turnover in the organisation, where employees do not have to worry about switching their jobs and moving to competing firms because of stressful, challenging workplace conditions and poor organisational culture. The cost of acquiring new employees is much higher than the cost of retaining the present employees, therefore, the leaders can play an imperative role in cutting down the high costs of recruitment for their organisation.
