The Heritage Foundation is a conservative political think tank that uses it influenced to change society. The think tank was founded in 1973 to advocate for conservative policies to the Nixon Administration. It continued advocating for pro-business economic policy, anti-communist domestic and foreign policy, and neoconservative social positions. It also attracted attention for advocating on behalf of conservative Christian movements. Heritage rose to prominence in the 1980s from its Mandate for Leadership report intended to give the Reagan Administration policy guidance. Their advocacy was characterized by Reagan as providing a significant role in the Reagan Doctrine and other conservative policies. It continued providing policy guidance for each subsequent presidential administration, although its success and influence fluctuated during that period. Generally, its influence waned during the tenure of Democratic presidents and rose during Republican Administrations. Generally, it has retained a record of high influence both domestically and abroad.[1] The University of Pennsylvania ranked Heritage as 12th worldwide and 7th in the United States.[1]

In the most recent administration, the Heritage Foundation has had widespread influence in government and culture. It’s academic arm was responsible for recommending at least 4 members of the Presidential cabinet, Scott Pruitt, Betsy DeVos, Mick Mulvaney, Rick Perry, and Jeff Sessions. Heritage’s lobbying arm, Heritage Action for America, has played a significant role in promoting conservative policies in Congress. As a 501(c)3, Heritage itself is not permitted to conduct direct lobbying or back specific legislation. Heritage Action takes the lead on these issues and helps lay the ground work for their ideal future.
