As a healthcare worker, nurses have the ability to influence health policies and legislation in more ways than they know. “Nurses’ influence on health policy protects the quality of care by access to required resources and opportunities” (Arabi, Rafii, Cheraghi & Ghiyasvandian. 2015). There are many resources available to the nurse so that they can try to create change at the federal, state, and local level of the organization. At the local level, a nurse can become involved by taking on leadership roles that allow them to communicate with local officials or legislations that will affect their hospital. The nurse will have an active voice and be able to provide examples from experience as a frontline worker. At the state and state level, joining more prominent organizations and keeping track of the new policies and legislations is a way to stay involved. This would include any conferences as well as joining larger organizations where they can be a representative of their region or state. It simply starts with being involved and participative within the hospital system and then figuring out how to spread their knowledge and information. Nurses can also email or call local or state offices to figure out who to address their concerns to.

There are various methods nurses can utilize to influence health policies and legislation. Nurses are often at the front line and witness first-hand how the health care system is unable to meet patient needs.  Rules, regulations, policies, and legislation are often put into action without a nurse input therefore delivery of health care or health care access can be poor. In order for nurses to contribute and effect change it has to begin with moving out of their comfort zone and into the arena of policy making. It is a responsibility that gives nurses the platform to make a difference. Successful advocacy can bring about changes and many state nursing and specialty nursing organizations sponsor annual state legislative days and offer policy internships. Nurses can attend policy workshops that are created to provide nurses the opportunity to learn more about health care issues and the legislative process. There is also another avenue in which nurses can join professional nursing organizations to enhance efforts. Organized nursing associations have more resources and able to strategize effectively versus individual nurses. Nurses must also be educated and informed of the legislative process and knowing who the key players are that will affect the change needed. In the end, there are multiple ways for nurses to influence policy and it begins with advocating through the simple actions of making a phone call or even writing a letter expressing your opinion. A nurse can also run for office themselves to influence health policies and legislation (ANA, 2007).

Discuss the controversy regarding childhood immunization and the potential affect on community health.

Choosing to vaccinate your child is both controversial and more recently, very political. Research has been conducted both for vaccinations, as well as reasons as why to not vaccinate. Government officials push vaccinations for children to prevent widespread infections of preventable diseases. Some feel that the government has an agenda to infect children with poisonous vaccinations.  “Limiting the development and use of vaccines however are social, political, ethical, and economic considerations, and this article will provide a brief exploration of each of these issues and the intersection with the need for such vaccines.” (Poland, et al, 2009) Political views are interjected within the vaccination debate. Some parents feel that the risks of side effects outweigh the benefit from the vaccinations.

Unfortunately, there have been many controversy regarding childhood immunizations and the potential affect on the community health. There are groups called “anti-vaxxers” who believe its actually bad to vaccinate their children. One big reason why “anti-vaxxers” believe vaccines are bad is because they believe vaccines do more harm than good. Another reason why vaccines are bad is because it isn’t good to give multiple vaccines at one time. “A number of studies and reviews have been conducted to examine the effects of giving various combinations of vaccines simultaneously. These studies have shown that the recommended vaccines are as effective in combination as they are individually, and that such combinations carry no greater risk for adverse side effects” (CDC 2020). There has been a large debate regarding vaccines as of late. Another example would be the measles break out at Disneyland. It was so bad that the theme park had to close for a period of time to make sure it was safe for tourist to visit. When people stop taking vaccines, they add to the problem of a disease coming back. Even though they might think a disease has been eradicated.
