Kathleen Yancey . Article”Prohibition.” Published in the New York Times in 1998. No page Number given. :The twenties were the years when drinking was against the law, and the law was a bad joke because everyone knew of a local bar where liquor could be had. They were the years when organized crime ruled the cities, and the police seemed powerless to do anything against it. Classical music was forgotten while jazz spread throughout the land, and the men like Six Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong , and Count Basie became the heroes of the young. The flapper was born in the twenties, and with her bobbed hair and short shirts, she symbolized, perhaps more than anyone or anything else, America’s break with the pass. A. Paraphrase of this passage.

I want to tell a small thing before explaining this passage- A paraphrase is expressing the meaning of (something written or spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
Its a very beautiful passage in which the trends of twenties (1920) are described. It is said that, In the twenties there was nothing like obeying laws. Laws are only in names. The policemen also seemed powerless those days. No actions were taken for breaking the laws. Drinking was prohibited and against law, but their were bars opened in which people go and drink. It can be said that twenties was the beginning of getting more modern and stepping into new shoes of Twenteith Century.
So the taste of music also got change and people change their preferance of listening Jazz music to Classical. Those days famous Six Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong & Count Basie were people’s hero and were famous for playing Jazz. In the twenties flapper also came to existence. Flappers were a generation of young western women in the 1920s who wore skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking driving automobiles and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the social, political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of Wirld War I, as well as the export of American Jazz Culture to Europe. More or less they can be called modern days bar dancers.
This is the paraphrase of the above provided message.
