natural disasters and psychological stress

Natural Disasters and Psychological Stress
Prompt:
We’ve just passed the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Even though many New Orleans residents still have not returned to the city, some believe that we can see the effects of the trauma of the hurricane in the crime rates. Others believe crime rates have risen in the large cities housing Katrina refugees. More importantly, many worry about the infants and children who have experienced not only the hurricane but the confusion, dislocation, and chaos in their families.
For this week’s discussion, complete the following:
Discuss how we might think about the effects of the hurricane on individuals and families who have suffered the effects of Katrina.
Incorporate an understanding of physiological stress and how it affects pregnancy outcomes and behavior.
Finally, view the trailer of the award winning documentary Trouble in the Water (2:01)
