Professor Malcom and class,

For the past 8 weeks, I have learned so much about the role of an APN. This class helped me understand the scope of practice of an APN to the full extent. The small details that I didn’t know before, I know now because this class required me to not only research it but also understand it as well by applying it into real life situations. It helped me meet the outcomes/competencies through my following experiences/research.

Having been a nurse for a little over 2 years and having experienced different situations as a nurse has prepared me to be a competent nurse. However, learning the role of an APN and using that same experience to be a scholar NP, I learned that through this class. It helped me learn what I need to do to prepare myself for the role of an APN which included learning from your prior experiences, taking on a leadership position, and using scholarly EBP articles to back up our research. A huge emphasis in this course was the importance of the role of an APN. Learning the professionalism of the role will help me set the tone of my soon-to-be career.

An APN’s role requires you to be an effective team leader. You must be able to delegate to your MAs, LPNs and RNs that you work with. Being an effective team leader also allows you to provide safe patient care because you are able to set expectations on the communication and behaviors you expect from your team. When you can get your team to communicate effectively with you, you provide safe patient care. According to a study done by Patton regarding workplace conflicts, she mentioned that communication was one of the biggest culprits for those conflicts along with “disrespect, lack of restraint, and irresponsibility”. (Patton, 2018). That is why you as an APN must set the tone for communication between your staff.

This class has emphasized the importance of being a team leader as an APN and how that allows you to make decisions and have working relationships with the staff. It is important to know that you don’t need to make friends with the people you work with, but you do need to be able to have the leadership skills to provide the best care to your patients and your staff needs to see you in that leadership role. Only because you are an APN does not mean staff will treat you as a leader, you need to give them a reason to view you as their leader and that too an effective one.

Another thing I learned in this class is the importance of building trusting relationships with the patients and how that allows the providers to also enjoy their job more! Establishing care with patients at a primary care clinic allows for patients to have trust in their PCPs and continuity of care allows for that trust to build overtime. In a study by Loeb, Bayliss, Candrian and deGruy “PCPs discussed developing a trusting relationship with their patients as therapeutic for patients and as fundamental to their ability to provide optimal care” (2016). Having that therapeutic relationship with the patients not only allows for the patients to form that trusting bond with their PCPs but also allows the PCPs to provide optimal care leading to better job satisfaction and patient satisfaction scores. Hence, when a provider is happy with the care they provide, you can see that in their work. Both lead to a happier and healthier state of mind for the patient and the providers/staff allowing them to actually enjoy their job and provide a safe environment.

I want to thank Professor Malcom and fellow students for being a great support through this class. I have enjoyed my time here and truly learned so much. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy new New Year!
