Should the author accept her own responsibility for what happened?

Meghan Daum delivers her verdict and blames life for destroying her romantic “virtual love” affair: “Neither of us had lied. We’d done the best we could. The physical world had invaded our space….The problem was life itself….The world had proved to be…too polluted to allow…[real love] ever to grow on the earth” (319-20)?  The author obviously doesn’t believe that love exists in real life. Should she also accept her own responsibility for what happened? Was she ever completely honest with Pete and herself? Did she care about Pete or only about PFSlider?
