1. Drones could be a major revolution in the supply chain industry. With drones being utilized for transporting and delivering goods, the cost of labor shall be significantly reduced. Further, programmed drones would be more efficient in terms of timely delivery. However, drones will reduce the human touch and could increase costs in case of returns. The safety of goods carried using drones could be another concern.
2. Drone home delivery will be extremely time efficient. Whatever is not possible to deliver on time humanly could be executed by drones. Further, it will add a new layer for excitement for the consumers to recieve goods via flying objects. An efficent supply chain process is a strong push for retailers to use drones.
3. A customer relationship manager system (CRM) will help maintain records of customer feedback on delivery processes. Further, an after sales report could be stored in the CRM system
4. Business process reingeeneering includes identifying the processes of supply chain, review update and analyze the information as is, design the new process, test and implement the new process. Here the BPR could help by identifying the time taken for drones to deliver the goods, how can it be reduced, what is the safety net for goods delivered using drones, does it need to be strengthened, what are the addional costs for building the safety net, what is the relative costs as compared to human delivery.
5. Drones delivery will have the following pros and cons:
Pros:
faster delivery
lower costs due to reduced labor intervention
adds a layer of excitement for consumer
cons:
drones are expensive and they will come with a much higher technology cost
drones remove the human element and in case of return of goods they will add more costs to the supplier
drones need qualified professional to operate them successfully.
package delivery using drone could be risky in case drones meet with accidents/ obstruction on their way. While the drones are built with alerts for obstruction, they could be damaged by other flying objects
