1.) Describe the cultural identities and dynamics of the client population with which you are interacting at your field agency, based on the information discussed with your supervisor and the observations you have made during your practicum thus far. How is your client population’s cultural makeup similar to and different from your own? Describe two cultural factors such as ethnicity, age, primary language, education, and religion, or others that are relevant to your engagement with this population.
answer….. Cultural identity is important to every individual on the planet. It is the way we have socialized, interacted, and been brought up within our lives. Cultural identity is central to all aspects of building our relationships with interactions (Garthwait, 2017). Within the agency and community, we see all walks of life within cultural identity. A lot of the clients that I will be seeing with my supervisor are those that have fallen upon hard times, are struggling with mental illness, or have been to jail for something. They get resources from my supervisor to help them be more successful and she provides them a home to live in while they get their lives together. This is like my own cultural identity because I know what it is like to grow up struggling because of any variety of reasons. The community locally is mostly those living at the poverty line, under the poverty line, or barely above it. Mental illness is very common locally and we have very few resources to combat the problem. I think what my supervisor does is needed work. She gives these people a chance to get their lives on track and is also why she is finishing her MSW. I have experienced living in poverty, and I know how it feels to need help. The second factor is the lack of resources for mental illness or knowing how to reach out. My clients are eager to work with me and she has already set up for me to work with a couple of them once I get clearance.
2.) Identify and describe at least 2 cultural strengths of the client population with which you are interacting at your field practicum? How can these strengths be used in the social work process? Give specific examples.
answer… The cultural strength that stands out to me is the willingness to make their lives better and to work with others to make things happen. My clients know what it is like to struggle and they want to improve their lives as much as they want to work alongside their caseworker. It is important to be just as willing to work with your caseworker as it is to want to better your life. These people seem to have a firm understanding of that. The client that my supervisor is having me meet first has taken all resources given to them and they have been willing to do anything to improve their lives. These strengths can be used within the social work practice by demonstrating a willingness to learn from previous mistakes and willingness to work with others to solve a problem. It is important to be willing to learn from your mistakes in this profession because no one is perfect. No one is going to get everything right the first time they are out on their own. Working with others to solve a problem is important because if a problem arises within the office, you are at you will need to work with others to fix the issue.
3.) Discuss 2 possible misunderstandings and misrepresentations you need to be mindful of regarding your population as discussed in chapter 10.
I think that within my agency the common misunderstanding is they are all the same when it comes to people that have hard luck. These clients are not all the same and not all people are alike. It is discouraging to clients that are thinking about seeking help to lump them in one big category. The second misrepresentation is that these clients are getting a free ride to be lazy. There has been hesitation to support this agency locally because the clients do get some leeway when they first start the program. These clients do not get a free ride and they are not lazy. The clients do have to pay a portion of rent and they do have to find a job if possible, within the first few months. Typically, these clients have successfully built a life for themselves by the end of the program and some even buy their own homes.
4.) How can you learn more about your client population’s culture(s)? Describe two strategies to expand your cultural competency in your field practicum and how those strategies may be useful.
answer is……. First and foremost, my strategy is to ask my clients as many questions as I can to learn more about their situations and observe their responses to try to further my education on their culture and beliefs. My second strategy is to research as much information as my supervisor will give me on their background so I can act appropriately according to their case. I think it is very important to not walk around culturally incompetent when it comes to your clients. These strategies are useful because it will give me more insight to their situation and help me not struggle to connect with them. Every client is different and not every client is going to mesh with my cultural beliefs or values. I also know that I am going to find myself believing that I can relate when I cannot in all reality. I need to learn to keep myself aware and make my clients willing to work with me.
