Wages are set in many ways. Sometimes they are set by collective bargaining, that is, bargaining between firms and unions. In the United States, collective bargaining plays a limited role (barely more than 10% of U.S. workers have their wages set by collective bargaining agreements). In other countries, Europe and Japan for example, however, collective bargaining plays a more prominent role. What is your take on the role of unions in strengthening workers bargaining power? In your discussion, please include the list the pros and cons of unionization. Need more detail.

My opinion also is that unions have great role in strengthening the bargaining power. In the presence of unions in the organization, workers feel job security. This makes the workers more confident about their actions and bargaining power increases. The management will be afraid to take actions against the employees when there is a strong union to protect the employees. Employer will be forced to negotiate with the workers and consider their requirements which increase the bargaining power much more. All these facts lead me to the conclusion that unions has great role in increasing the bargaining power of workers.
One of the pros of unionization is that union members work together and try to improve the productivity of the firm. The unions agree the fact that the union as well as the workers can exist in the company only if the company is profitable and unions have the capability to guide the workers towards success of the organization. Another pro is that unions work towards improving the workplace conditions by persuading the management and demand for better tools and machines. They also ensure safety in workplace including job security. This helps to improve the confidence of the workers. Unions also set the rules for the workers which help to avoid conflicts among the workers and ensure better workplace behavior from the workers. The employee welfare is also ensured by the unions apart from wages as per the current trend by bargaining with the employers. Minimum wages to the employees are ensured by the unions and take necessary steps to ensure the same if the employer decides wages less than minimum. The cons include the strikes and protests by the union when the bargaining attempt fails. The management as well as the workers is getting affected if the unions call for strike. Another cons is the over involvement of unions in business decisions and unions may try to challenge the management decisions in some cases even though the decision is beneficial for the organization. But all these pros and cons help to strengthen the bargaining power of the workers.
