Ethics refers to the moral propositions that control or guide a person’s behaviour while conducting an activity. These are the underlying principles that a person voluntarily abides by when acting ethically/responsibly as an individual or has to necessarily abide by when working in an organisational environment/culture. The basic difference between the two situations is that when acting ethically individually, the urge to abide by certain moral principles comes from the within and it is the person’s own set of rules or morally acceptable behaviour that he or she sticks to during testing times. It is not forced upon by any other individual and does not require an external motivation. On the other hand, in an organisational structure, all the members of the organisation, irrespective of their position in the organisational hierarchy, have to abide by the code of ethics of the company. Most of the organisations have written code of ethics that defines the morally acceptable behaviour and guidelines that the employees have to follow in their day-to-day functioning at the job. Code of ethics is the shared beliefs and values of the members of the organisation and forms the foundation of the organisational culture. Often, the ethical behaviour or the need to act responsibly is forced upon the employee and the morally acceptable behaviour in an organisational set up may not necessarily be the same as an individual’s own set of ethical rules.
The major challenge that is associated with ethical behaviour in an organisation is the fact no two employees may have the same definition of ethical and responsible behaviour. Each one of them may have different perspectives of what is ethical and what is not. This scenario often becomes the source of conflict within the organisation and affects/delays the day-to-day decision making process. In order to resolve conflicts arising from such situations, it is advised to abide by the written code of ethics of the organisation and use these written codes as a guide to routine functioning in the organisation.
