15-2. Describe the traditional model of the change process. How does it differ from the contemporary view of change?

Change Process: Change process is defined as the process of transition / conversion from one stage to another stage in an organization for achieving better, faster and cheaper benefits for the organization.
Change is a rule of nature and it drives automatically in nature and every part of nature. So organizations need to have change process, for managing and implementing, the required changes in their respective organization.
Traditional model of change: Changes in organizations are being practices from a long time. The first model of change was presented by Kurt Lewin in 1947. The model explains the change in three steps: unfreezing, change, freezing. Then later many change models were presented after this and in 1995 John Kotter’s model change was well taken by the organizations. It contains eight steps of change management in any organization.
Kurt Lewin’s Traditional Model of Change is as below: This model is explained in three steps as below
Unfreezing Step : This is the first step of change which explains the understanding the current status of the process in the organization and its assessment for change required. This will be supported by the driving forces which are driving changes in the current process in the organization. We need to understand the resistance for the proposed change in the organization.
Change Step: This is the step of change drive in the organization. We need to plan the change and take the necessary action for the change. Then we need to make the change in the organization by involving suitable people/ employees, which are affected by the proposed change. This step brings the change in the organization.
Freezing Step : This is the last step of change management in the organization. Here we need to establish the change for permanent lasting in the organization. We need to provide the required training and information to the affected employees. We need to establish a control plan for ensuring the change will be continue in the process. At last we need to recognize the team involved in the change management.
Traditional model’s difference with respect to contemporary view of change:
The traditional view of change starts from the top of the organization to bottom of the organization. They follow top-bottom approach. The leadership drives the change and it is being implemented by a dedicated team of employees. The changes were not so frequent and happens on a long time. But in the contemporary view, the current change process follows both approaches i.e. bottom-top approach and top-bottom approach. The change can be drive by the employees as well as by the leadership. Both are empowered for making change in the organization for better faster, cheaper business results. The latest model of change is presented by John Kotter, which explained in eight steps of change management.
