Nonverbal communication

Nonverbal communication

Nonverbal communication plays a central role when one is passing a message to another. Furthermore, over ninety percent of information shared is supported by body language. Therefore, it can be defined as an avenue of transferring and receiving messages through other means apart from words. Such can be gestures, voice tone or facial expressions. Notably, researchers argue that the body cannot lie to itself; therefore, the signals that emanate from a person are usually accurate (Mehrabian, 2017).  When speaking with a person for the first time it is easy to deduct what they mean by observing their body language. This paper seeks to analyze forms of nonverbal communication.

Social psychologists today base their arguments about the expression of emotions in human beings and animals on a theory made by Charles Darwin. In it, he posed the question “why do we express emotions in the way that we do?” For example, why do people narrow their eyes when angry or wrinkle the nose if 0ne is disgusted. He answered that humanity behaves this way because they are vestiges of serviceable behavior. In other words, they have evolved over the years due to a close association between the activity and the feeling. Wrinkling of a nose is associated with inhalation of foul ardors (Mehrabian, 2017).

Nonverbal communication can be used to express multiple functions (Eaves & Leathers, 2017). Argues that by modulating vascular blood flow a facial expression plays a role in active experience and at the same time convey information the emotional state of an individual. Such communicative effects can involve different mechanisms; however, they can be controlled by a person and produced voluntarily. For example, while a smile is considered an accompaniment of a positive internal state, it can be influenced and created at will even during tough times. Notably, Social functions may dictate the kind of expression to exhibit. (Burgoon, Guerrero & Floyd, 2016) notes that paying attention to others can potentiate one to smile in different circumstances.

                                                      Movement and body posture

Movement and body position can show the degree of involvement between communicators. Usually, it is expressed through indicators such as the direction of lean, location of the arm, body orientation, and openness. For example, the extent of fondness that one has for the other, in the same way, a forward lean can signify positive language (Eaves & Leathers,2017).

                                                           Haptic communication

Haptic communication is a way which people and animals pass a message through touch, for example, if an individual is blindfolded the sense of differentiating smooth and rough surfaces. This type of nonverbal communication is especially vital in conveying physical intimacy. However, acceptable levels of touching are dependent on various cultures that exist; in Thailand touching a person’s head is considered rude.

Conclusion

Nonverbal communication affects every aspect of passing information to others in powerful ways especially given the dominance of nonverbal form to words. The importance of such cannot be understated. For example, haptic communication plays a role in reproduction in individual animals. In the same way, cultures have different ways to pass across messages that may be considered vulgar or indecent by others. Such can include kissing in public. Notably, in some instances, it is difficult to read what the other person wants to be understood. However, there are universal methods that mostly express internal feelings of love and anger (Mehrabian, 2017).
