Please note:
- The assignment must be submitted to Turnitin in WORD format
- For submitting your workbook exercises, please you use the following template. You should stick to the word limit per question. If you fall outside limits, it is likely you will lose marks for a lack of information at one extreme or for not being clear and concise at the other.
- Font and spacing:Please use font Calibri (body) or Arial, size 10 and the line spacing should be adjusted to Multiple at 15
- Spelling:Australian/English spelling is required. Please ensure your spell check is on English (Australia).
- Referencing:The study guide and lecture notes are not to be used as references. There are enough references and readings listed in the study guide and reading lists to support any statements that you make. Alternatively, there are many sources available through the QUT library. A reference list is required and should always be placed immediately after the main body of the document (ie. before the appendices.). Consistent referencing style is to be used.
Should any of the above requirements not be met, they will impact on marking.
Module 1 Activities – 18 marks
Activity 1.1: 700 – 1,000 words
- Construct a brief one page letter to the Chief Executive Officer of a local hospital seeking their involvement in the development of a community disaster plan. In your letter, explain the importance and value of their involvement.
- There are common factors that underpin disasters which are critical to the planning process, these include.
- Systems under severe stress;
- Disruptions to normal systems particularly transport and communications;
- There will be new and different demands on responders;
- They require more and different organisational relationships;
- There will be a loss of part of the autonomy of organisations;
- Different performance standards will be required and accepted (e.g. see “Crisis standards of care”).
Briefly explain how you could overcome or mitigate these factors and how this will assist in your response and recovery from a disaster
- Briefly discuss the role of health services in the preparation for disasters
Module 2 Activities – 10 marks
Activity 2.1: 250 words
Consider the National Centre for Disease Medicine and Public Health (2010)
- List the core competencies for public health disaster preparedness and response education.
Develop a table briefly explaining how you could apply these to generic disaster management – beyond the health sector.
Activity 2.2: 500 words
- What strategies are essential in preparing an organisation for disasters?
- Identify three critical infrastructures in a community with which you are familiar. Describe their interdependency and identify strategies which would ensure they are protected.
Identify the core components of an educational program for an organisation with which you are familiar.
Module 3 Activities – 6 marks
Activity 3.1: 250 – 500 words
- Describe the key components of a resilient community and state why you believe they are important.
- Identify and describe how you would implement five key strategies to improve the resilience of a community.
Resilience should come from within the community yet government agencies remain accountable. Discuss this dilemma and way in which government agencies may address it.
Module 4 Activities – 6 marks
Activity 4.1: 250 – 500 words
- Discuss how you would account for the specific needs of individual events within an all-hazard, all-agencies planning framework.
- Consider the Big Day Out concerts. Describe the key aspects of risk at such an event and indicate how the biomedical, psychosocial and environmental domains may interrelate to inform the risk profile?
- How should a community prepare for low probability high impact events such as a major terrorist attack?
