The first step that should be involved in leadership in any situation is analysis or working to gain a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the situation before taking action. To me, this means understanding both the task side of things and people side of things. Before a leader can take action to deal with, promote or facilitate a solution they must understand what is happening now and what the impact is. Another step in leadership should measurement of the outcome. This process can involve feedback from the staff impacted or measurement of metrics that were impacted as a result of a decision. If a leader understands a the situation and the impact its having now they can partner with key stakeholders to create a solution that will have a measurable and positive impact.
For leading me I would prefer that supporting approach, the high supportive and low directive approach. According to Northouse (2018 )” In this approach, the leader does not focus exclusively on goals but uses supportive behaviors that bring out followers’ skills around the goal to be accomplished” (section 5.1, para. 8). I have been in my operational vertical for 25+ years, at this point I enjoy the consultative approach to leadership. Where my leader trusts my judgement and values my ideas by listening and providing feedback. I prefer to understand the situation that requires my attention and to solve it in a collaborative while thinking outside of the box. I love to bring innovation and different solutions to a business that needs to evolve to thrive. In order for me to function in the above listed environment i need the autonomy to make decisions but still require support and sounding board for ideas.

Leadership is necessary for any business or organization; however, it is whether it is effective leadership or not that makes the difference in reaching the mission and completing its goals. To have effective leadership there are steps one should take. At least two of these include leading by example and positive energy and attitude. Both steps go hand in hand and are necessary. A positive leader who can lead by example is more affective to their team than a negative one who broods. My current employment situation is a perfect example as there have been many changes in our school division and my supervisor has not hesitated in sharing her negativity about those changes which affects all of us under her leadership. The situational approach is one that is based on the premise that different situations need different styles of leadership (Northouse, 2018). A leader who can take the situational approach demonstrates their ability to assess their followers and their needs and meet those needs on an individual basis to help the team reach the goals and vision together.
