Assignment: Write a Policy Report

Each student is expected to write a policy report of China (2,000 words) on a topic s/he chooses.

Please see below for guidelines:

What is a policy report?

— A policy report is a document that recommends a particular solution to a current policy debate and provides rationale for it.

— Its purpose is to convince the reader (whoever might read the report) that the recommended policy is the best choice for course of action.

— A policy report is well-focused, evidence-based, action-oriented, and tersely worded.

What should be included into the report?

1. An executive summary – a short summary (about 150 words) of the purpose and recommendation of the policy report.
2. An introduction to the issue/problem – a statement of the issue to be discussed, the background, and its importance.
3. An assessment of policy options — a critical discussion of alternative solutions that have been proposed for the problem.
4. A recommendation for course of action — a presentation of and argument for the solution that you think most suitable, supported by powerful evidence (note: this should be the major part of the paper), and specific practical steps or measures to be taken.

What else may be included?

Appendices – tables and charts, etc.

Choose one of the following topics:

Should the Chinese government encourage the rise of strong nationalist sentiment in China? Why and why not?

What role can China play in the United Nations? Should China use its veto power more frequently? Should China contribute more money to support the UN?

Should the Chinese government use force to resolve the Taiwan issue?

Notes:

1. The papers must be properly referenced and carefully proofread. If any material from other books or internet sources is used, it must be indicated. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism.
2. All the papers should be checked by the software Grammarly and carefully proofread to eliminate writing mistakes.
3. Late papers (submitted after the deadline for whatever reason) will receive a lower grade. Failure to submit the paper by the end of the semester will receive an “F” for the course.
