Every F—ing Day of My Life
The film presents a case scenario of domestic violence. In their wedding, Wendy had envisioned a colorful marriage-one devoid of prevalent domestic violence and other hustles. These were never to be fulfilled as her husband, Aaron developed violent mindset. He often clutched her head and provided verbal threats. These took root prior the birth of their son, Randy. The threats, and probably the love for her husband, made Wendy survive the domestic abuse. She covered these up as she felt exposing the rot to other family members (extended family) will put her children in more danger of the abuse. Randy had been open about the situation and had even confessed to her teacher about instigating his father’s death. The neighbors were conscious of these happenings at the Maldonados, but never attempted a decision to salvage the Wendy and her sons. They could have informed the federal agents who would have probed further into the matter. Probably, they could have intercepted Aaron’s death and save Wendy the court sentence. Threats by Aaron were only known to Wendy, which put her in a hostage position; sharing the info would unearth Aaron’s misdoings and give justice to Wendy and her sons. Aaron had threatened killing Wendy’s family if she attempted to escape the marriage, which if she did, would proceed killing them unless she returned.
Aaron had performed homicide drills on Wendy. She had even a designated spot where Wendy would die. One time she had taken her to a spot in Oregon, in the hills where he desired Wendy dead. The traceability of the crime might have prevented Aaron from actually killing Wendy. The exposure of the children to these violent scenarios affected their psychology, as one suggested killing his father (due to the trauma he propagates). Even with painful slaps and bangs he withstood, Wendy never attempted otherwise-deserting the marriage. She presents a perfect scenario for a mother who survives life hurdles for the safety of her children and family. She did not know when she had to move on from the marriage or to hold on as she was blinded by Aaron’s threats.
Even with the little publicity Wendy’s scenario got, it just passed for a banter as the several police visits yielded little considerations. One such incident depicted a police car stopping by the Maldonados in the evening after a report of violence case in the house. Things had cooled off which might have preempted their concern as they left the scene without entering Wendy’s home. Wendy’s friends were well aware of the domestic violence and knew the impact of such incidences. Even with this knowledge and ability, they did not report the case to the police as they too were afraid of Aaron. Aaron had created the image of an unpunishable fugitive, who beat Wendy whenever she liked and dropped a threat or two wherever he felt fit. Randy’s report to the teacher of his intent to kill his father could have unearthed the underlying reasons for such thought. This could have led the discovery of domestic violence in that home and appropriate legal action instigated against Aaron.
Having grown weary of the beatings and the threats, Randy tried to salvage the situation by calling 911 during Aaron’s violence bursts. The police arrived at the scene quickly, but Aaron threatened Randy to lying everything was okay. He used the other three children as hostages to force Randy to do so. Luckily, the police left appeasing the situation shortly. But Randy and Wendy planned to exterminate Aaron. They searched for the hammer and a hatchet which they attacked Aaron with as he lay. They managed to execute the murder, but were in more legal quagmire. Randy and Wendy were then accused of murder, which they accepted. For defensive statement, they used self-defence against domestic violence. Pleading guilty to the murder charges made them susceptible to consequences of such charges-life imprisonment as death sentences had been revoked in the constitution. The reasons behind the murder, self-defense, made Randy and Wendy receive preferential sentence. Wendy was given 2 years sentence and Randy 6.25 years. It is a controversial sentence as the murdered individual had verbalized the death of his murderers (Wendy, Randy and all the other children/family). Actions portraying these intent are depicted by the physical bangs on Wendy’s body. Witness accounts by the neighbors and the children clearly show Aaron’s intent of murdering Wendy and her family if she ever ran away. Verbalizing, but no actual police records of the threats or attacks could have sentenced Wendy and Randy to prison. But also little interest and casual handling by the police of the previous reports of domestic violence should serve to reduce the sentence.
Domestic violence encompassed voiced intimidations, physical and emotional cruelty. Wendy and the four children were exposed to these abuses and the killing of Aaron stopped continued subjection to such. It actually saved the family, but this came at a cost-the imprisonment of Wendy and Randy.
