Find an example of a social initiative / CSR activity engaged in by a business organization. Provide a description of the social initiative / CSR activity (a few sentences should suffice). After describing this activity explain what model of CSR we covered in Module C (i.e., economic model, stakeholder model, integrative model) you think best describes this activity (and why). Additionally, explain whether or not you think this activity could be described as a core competency/value driven social initiative or not (being sure to explain why or why not).

Let us consider the example of Coca-Cola. The company has shown substantial efforts in women’s development across the world. The objective is to empower 5 million women as entrepreneurs in the Coca-Cola value chain by 2020 (the project is known as 5by20TM ). This includes removal of barriers in several ways including putting an impact on training and skill development, providing financial support, building leadership skills, building up peers and connections in society and business world, and actuating focussed scaling of successful ventures. The project has enabled 1.2 Million women from 2010 onwards. Basically, the company is focusing on partnership models headed by women entrepreneurs. The thought process behind this project is that the development of women will have the immediate as well as long-term rippling effect in building society and community.
The project is an example of social web or stakeholder model of CSR because the company is acting as an agent for developing different other sectors of the society which are affected by or affect company’s operation and strategy. The stakeholder model of CSR answers the question that for whose benefit and at which cost the business is standing. Here, the cost is incurred by the company’s own fund but the development is shared by a larger portion of the society.
This is also a core competency or value-driven initiative because first of all, the initiative of empowering women across the value chain of Coca-Cola is an initiative, not every company can take or replicate. Second, it is based on a value proposition of empowering women partners and hence developing the society in an equitable manner. This is clear-cut value statement for the stakeholders of the company which is far distinct from its economic activities.
