Reaction Paper IV Prompt As mentioned on our syllabus at the beginning of this course, Margaret Mead states, “Never ever depend on governments or institutions to solve any major problems. All social change comes from the passion of individuals.” This paper involves reflecting on a contemporary social problem of your choice that you would like to see fixed or solved in some way. It also provides a context for recognizing your potential for engaging in political or social protest (as defined by Goodwin and Jasper in the supplemental reading).Write your papers using one-inch margins, double-spaced, and 12-point font. The entire paper should be at least 5-6 pages in length (it may be even longer). REMEMBER TO UPLOAD YOUR PAPER AS A WORD DOCUMENT ONLY! Make sure to complete both steps of this assignment: Step I:Choose a particular current social problem that you feel passionately about. It could be one of the problems from our course, the textbook, or what is currently happening in our society (it could be at the local, state, national, or international level) or in another society around the world. Then, design a realistic plan to solve your social problem. The following are central questions to consider in writing about your problem and how you suggest fixing it. This part of the assignment should be at least 4-5 pages. Make sure you are detailed, organized, realistic, and humane in your solution. Consider the following guiding questions when writing:What is the social problem? What is the history of the problem? Has it always been a public concern? Has its definition changed over time? Is there a consensus that it is, in fact, a social problem? What has been the role of media with the social problem? How has media coverage fluctuated during the history of the social problem? What public debates surround the issue? Are there competing sides, ad what are their moral and empirical claims? What does each side see as the problem’s solution? How does this problem relate to other social problems we have discussed in class? How do you propose to solve/fix the social problem? Detail your plan; discuss the key leaders, steps, tactics, and successes needed for the problem to be fixed. Make sure the plan is realistic (and humane!).What do you predict will happen with your proposed solution in the next 10 years, and why?Step II:This next step involves writing a formal letter (it is up to you whether you actually want to send it!) to the President of the United States. The purpose of your letter is for you to take action with what you know about the contemporary social problem you have chosen to write about in the first part of this assignment.First, search online for “How to write a letter to the President of the United States.” Make sure you have the correct address and any contact information you’ll need to include in the letter. Treat this letter as if you were actually sending it to the POTUS. Then, create your letter with the following information (your letter should be at least one page, maybe even two pages!):Make sure to include the address for the President and the date.State who you are, where you live, and any other information about you that is relevant.State the contemporary social problem you want to fixed or solved. Make sure to describe why the social problem is an issue, and how it is currently impacting individuals and our society. Include any supporting data (from the book, our supplemental readings, or your own research) that would be relevant.Detail how you think the problem should be fixed or solved. Be clear with your plan.Tell the President directly what you think his responsibility should be in fixing or solving the social problem. This may involve some pretty persuasive writing.Conclude your letter reiterating why you feel passionate about this particular social change. Make sure to also include your signature line!
