Resistance & Reproduction of Gendered Inequalities
As you have learned over the course of the semester, there are various ways that gendered inequalities can be challenged or reproduced in everyday life. This analytical reflection essay has the goal of helping you to reflect on how you yourself contribute to and/or challenge gendered inequalities.
Think of a situation in which you either resisted or reproduced gender oppression. Some situations might involve both.
Important: You should have experienced this yourself (preferably recently), where you made a decision or took an action one way or another, and not someone else’s story. I will not share your assignment with anyone, but feel free to change names or details to ensure confidentiality for others involved.
Suitable situations range from participating in group activities or events (for example protests or meetings), interactions with friends, shopping, an instance of implicit or hostile sexism you encounter in class, work, home, etc. Mention some of the strategies you used when you encountered these situations (such as pariah femininities, patriarchal bargaining, etc.) as they seem fitting.
Format: Proper ASA citation and bibliography required. Resistance & Reproduction of Gendered Inequalities
The paper should include the following three sections:
Part 1 (20 points): Describe the situation.
Part 2 (60 points): Explain how this situation is important to analyze from gender lens and why you consider your actions as resisting or reproducing gendered inequalities. Explain how this situation relates to the gendered (in-) equalities by relating your experience to the “gender lens” we have been discussing in class, by using three key concepts/theories (each 20 points) from the course material and class discussions.
Explain these concepts/theories in your own words, then explain how they relate to your situation, making sure to use the appropriate terminology from the course materials.
Make sure to analyze each concept and its relation to your situation in separate paragraphs (each concept/theory should be at least 1-2 paragraphs). In other words, don’t just define the concepts but apply them in a meaningful way.
Part 3 (20 points): Explain how everyday resistance to gendered inequalities is important in the context of social change and how much impact individual actions can have on the reproduction of gender inequalities. Discuss the importance of everyday resistance to gender inequalities alongside historical change (see chapter 9) and the need for more macro-level institutional change, for example laws (chapter 8).
