As the authors of the textbook point out, “By the early nineteenth century, northern states had either abolished slavery or put it on the road to extinction, while southern states were building the largest slave society in the New World…By 1860, one-third of the South’s population was enslaved.” Herein lies the foundation of the bitter political dispute that would ignite the American Civil War in 1861 – that being slavery.
