Despite the grudging acceptance of a rebellious youth culture, American society still expected men and women to settle down and conform to traditional roles—marriage and family, male breadwinners and female homemakers, women as primarily in charge of child-reading—once they entered adulthood. By and large most men and women conformed to such expectations and standards, even despite the precedent of women’s larger role in the workforce during World War II. Why was there such an emphasis on traditional gender roles during the decade, and why, apparently, did women actively and enthusiastically assume subordinate roles within the family and the workforce? What did social thinkers fear or assume the costs or consequences would be if women sought an existence as something other than homemakers and mothers?
