Chapter Introduction

From The College Writer: Process writing helps us understand our world and ourselves by answering interesting questions like these: How does cancer spread? How did Abraham Lincoln come to advocate the “Emancipation Proclamation”? Why did Cesar Chavez’s reputation as a labor leader rise or decline?

Writing that answers questions…analyzes a process by breaking it down into steps, often grouping the steps into stages or phases. In addition to explaining the process, sometimes the writing also examines related causes and effects. Such papers are developed and formatted as essays, and the information in this chapter will help you read and write them. However, writing that explains how readers can complete a process typically takes the form of technical instructions.

Strategies for Process Writing

Analyzing a process is an effort to explain how something happens, works, is made, or is done. The process may be natural (a phenomenon that occurs in nature, including human nature), performative (mechanical, something people do), or historical/cultural (events in time or within communities or groups).

Think about a policy, rule, or time during your adult education or employment history, which your understanding of—or position on–an issue, event, or other topic changed. Be sure that the topic you are writing about is relevant, citations provided to support various information, and references provided. All items must follow APA Style.

Planning

To start the writing process and to help build ideas for your essay do the following:

· Map, make an outline, or simply jot down situations dealing with the policy, or rule, or time during you adult education or employment history.

Instructions

· Paragraph 1 = Introduction—include the thesis in its proper area.

· Paragraph(s) 2 and 3 = Analyze the transition-how did it go from point to another

· Paragraph(s) 4 and 5 = Identify related stages and steps,

· Paragraph(s) 6 and 7= Explain possible causes and effects,

· Paragraph Closing = Address the overall impact of the experience.

· An APA paragraph is 4-6 complete sentences.

Writing Notes

· Use the APA 6th ed. [Available at the OWL Website —APA…section]

· APA Coversheet Required

· Minimum of 5-paragraphs and no more than 9-paragraphs.

· APA References page

· Do not include questions in the final paper.

· Do not use conjunctions to start sentences.

· Do not include contractions.

· Follow APA Style guidelines.
