Analyze the idea of making English the official language of the US. It is not the official language, but many people believe that it is. Many states (including CA) have made English the official language:

The specificity of this will allow you to talk about some of the (potentially) positive aspects of having an official language (Preece Jackson makes a theoretical argument along those lines), but you can also talk about how and why this can also be an effort to create a hierarchy of who is “truly” an American.
You could look into what other democracies have official languages to see the variety of approaches that are taken.
Need to site good sources. You might want to look at a more specific political debate to link the larger ideas to a specific policy. Take a look at Geertz’s article to see how he describes the political dynamics of primordialism.
Key things to talk about: nationalism, definition of nationalism, primordialism and whatever else you can pull from what I said up there ^
