The first step to deciding what you want to research, is to think about what you found interesting this semester so far. What fairytale have you found the most interesting? What concepts in fairy tales intrigue you?
You can then think of concepts. Maybe you want to focus on the role of mothers in fairytales, disability studies, a medical view of classic fairytales, why evil women are always depicted as ugly, how young women are affected by watching Disney movies and reading fairytales, what stereotypes are placed on men.
There is so much to explore and analyze!
In 100-200 words, please write a topic proposal that details what fairytale you may want to focus on, what possible articles you may want to use, and what concepts you want to talk about.
My Response Topic
Since I was a little girl, I have always loved Beauty and the Beast. This class has introduced me to new versions of this fairytale and it is very intriguing. Honestly, before taking this class I was very naive and unaware of the originals and that there was any other version of Beauty and the Beast. I am not quite sure what approach I will take on this paper, however it may be the relationship between a father and daughter.
Some possible articles that I would like to use are: https://www.glamour.com/story/the-real-story-behin… and https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/beauty-and-th…
This week, you will be creating an Annotated Bibliography of AT LEAST 3 sources. For the Final Research Paper, you will attach this bibliography which will then have a minimum of 6 sources. However, for now, focus on 3 main sources, and if you have other articles, be sure to include them as well.
An annotated bibliography is, by definition: a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited .
Therefore a bibliography is like a Works Cited (except you DO NOT have to cite/quote all of these in your final paper.) A bibliography shows me EVERYTHING you read to research for this paper. Including web articles, Disney movies, etc.
An annotation is a paragraph, 3-4 sentences, describing what the source is, how you intend on using it in your paper, and what its about.
If you finish with your annotated bib, I suggest you begin outlining and formatting your rough draft.
Remember, you need to bring in quotes, paraphrases and citations from your articles AND fairytale. There should be approx. 1 quote per paragraph and you should not assume the reader is familiar with the articles.
on a different document please answer the following reflection questions.
In your own words, what is the difference between an Annotated Bibliography and a Works Cited page? What is due for your final paper?
What is your major concern this week going into your rough draft?
What do you anticipate your thesis statement being?
