Area of Interest Power Point Presentation

Hi! Today we will be going over the requirements for your Week 6 Area of Interest Power Point presentation.

The process for affecting positive change to improve nursing practice outcomes can start with either the identification of an area of interest related to NP practice or the identification of a potential or existing practice problem. The purpose of this presentation is to give you an opportunity to explore a practice problem of interest to nurse practitioners. Selecting an area of interest helps to define a direction for further inquiry.

The presentation should be created using Microsoft Power Point and should include 8-12 slides, excluding the title and reference slides. It will be graded on the quality of information you provide. Be sure to support your work with a minimum of four scholarly sources. Citations should be in APA format. Be sure to follow the assignment instructions and rubric closely. Scroll down in the assignment guidelines to see the criteria and point distribution. If you have questions, post them in the Q & A Forum. If questions are of a more personal nature, please email your instructor.

In a Power Point presentation, key concepts are to be presented as bulleted or numbered points on the slides. Each slide, excluding the title and reference slides, should also include speaker’s notes. Speaker’s notes provide a more in-depth explanation of your slide content. Speaker’s notes should be written in complete sentences using appropriate grammar and in-text citations as appropriate.

To add speaker’s notes to your presentation, be sure that your presentation is in Normal View. In normal view, there are thumbnail pictures of your slides on the L side of the screen with the current slide you are working on in the center of the screen. If you look down below current slide, you will see an area that says “click to add notes.†Notes should be typed into this area. Typically, speaker’s notes are a few sentences to a few paragraphs depending on the topic of the slide.

The presentation should have an introduction slide after the title slide. The intro slide should contain bullets indicating the topics your presentation will cover. The speaker’s notes should briefly describe the content and purpose of your presentation.

On the next slide, you will describe why it’s important for master’s prepared nurses to engage in evidence-based projects. Remember, evidence-based practice is a general term that describes nursing practice that is supported by research evidence. Evidence-based projects are projects that help us gather evidence and apply it to practice. Why would it be beneficial for master’s prepared nurses to participate in such projects?

On the next slide, you will provide an illustration of an evidence based practice model that could be used to develop an evidence-based project. Possible models include The John’s Hopkins Model or the Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration (ARCC) Model or you may select another model you find in the literature. The week 6 MSN Evidence-Based Project lesson has more information about models. In the speaker’s notes for the slide, explain the steps of the model. Provide support from at least one outside scholarly source (not the textbook or course lesson).

On the next slide, you will identify an area of interest related to NP practice in which a practice change may be needed. There may be a high prevalence of a disease or condition in a specific population or there may be a general need to improve the quality of care in relation to specific practice area. For example, one of my past students identified an area of interest related to diabetic wounds. She provided information describing the problem and statistics describing the prevalence of the issue and the cost of treating a diabetic wound. Your area of interest should pertain to a clinical practice concern that an NP might address. It would be great to find a topic that you find personally interesting as you can build on this presentation for the assignments in some of your later courses if you wish. The slide content should identify the area of interest and what is currently about the problem or issue. Statistics supporting the scope of the issue may be used. The speaker’s notes should more fully explain why the area of interest is important to NP practice. Please provide support from at least one outside scholarly source.

On the next slide, you will be looking at a specific concern or issue pertaining to your area of interest and making a recommendation for a practice change. For example, the student who identified diabetic wounds as her area of interest chose to focus on the need to change practice in relation to diabetic foot wounds. Her recommended practice change involved patient teaching with phone call follow-up to provide additional coaching. Be sure to provide support for your recommended change from at least one scholarly source.

On the next slide, you will be looking at factors that could support or impede your ability to make the change you recommended on the previous slide. Some questions to consider for internal factors include: Are patients’ or providers’ beliefs an issue? Are organizational policies and procedures congruent with the proposed change? Are there available organizational resources to support the change? For external factors, what social attitudes could impact the ability to make the change? Are there regulatory or healthcare policy issues that would support or impede your recommendations? Is there available insurance coverage? What about community support? Factors may be based on personal experience or on information you found in your research. If the identified factors come from the literature, provide reference citations to support your ideas.

On the next slide, you will be referring back to the NONPF competencies. The link to the competencies are in the module 2 readings. The week 4 lesson contains additional information on the competencies. You will select at least two NONPF competencies relevant to your area of interest and proposed change. Describe how the competencies relate. Be sure to provide support from at least one scholarly source. Remember, your textbook and the weekly lesson are not considered scholarly sources.

The conclusion of your presentation should summarize the presentation and provide a statement or two tying everything together.

Your reference slide should include at least 4 scholarly sources. Sources should be current, within the last 5 years. Remember, practice is constantly evolving, so it’s critical to use the most current evidence available. Reference content should be in APA format and should follow guidelines for capitalization and italics. You can disregard double spacing of hanging indents on the reference slide. It is fine to bullet references. The font size on the reference slide can be smaller than on the presentation slides. It is fine to include more than one reference slide if needed.

Some APA formatting is required for the presentation, as noted on the previous slide. In-text citations on the slides and in the speaker’s notes should follow APA guidelines.

Speaker’s notes should be in complete sentences and should be grammatically correct. Slides should not contain errors.

Slide formatting is an important part of an effective presentation. The presentation should have title and reference slides. The appearance of the slides should professional. Slide content should not be cluttered. It is recommended that you follow the 7×7 guideline: no more than 7 slides on a line with no more than 7 words per line. If you are including in-text citations on your slides, the citations do not count as part of the 7×7 recommendation. Citations should follow the bullet content in a smaller font. You may find it helpful to develop your slide content before selecting a slide design to be sure that your slide content will fit neatly on the template.

***Choose a topic from the attached List of Possible Topics

Note: The purpose of the MSN project proposal  is to translate evidence currently found in the literature into practice within the chosen specialty track.  Due to the research complexity, time involvement, and implications regarding human subjects, drug studies are not acceptable areas of interest for a MSN project.

  1. Introduction: slide should identify concepts to be addressed and sections of the presentation. Include speaker’s notes that explain, in more detail, what will be covered.
  2. Evidence-based projects: slide should explain the general importance of master’s-prepared nurses engaging in evidence-based projects related to nursing practice and profession. Provide speaker’s notes with additional detail and support from at least one outside scholarly source (not the textbook or course lesson).
  3. Conceptual Model: slide should provide an illustration of a conceptual model that could be used to develop an evidence-based project. Possible models include The John’s Hopkins or Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration (ARCC) Models or you may select another model you find in the literature. Provide support from at least one outside scholarly source (not the textbook or course lesson).
  4. Area of Interest: identify an area of interest related to NP practice in which a practice change may be needed. Slide should identify the area of interest and what is currently known on the topic. Speaker’s notes more fully explain what is currently known and should provide rationale for why the area of interest is important to NP practice. Provide support from at least one outside scholarly source (not the textbook or course lesson).
  5. Issue/concern and recommendation for change: slide should identify a specific concern related to your general area of interest and your recommendation for a practice change. Speaker’s notes should more fully explain the recommended change and rationale for the change. Recommendation should be supported by at least one outside scholarly source (not the textbook or course lesson).
  6. Factors Influencing Change: slide should identify at least 2 internal and external factors that could impact your ability to implement your recommended change. Speaker’s notes should more fully explain how the factors you’ve identified would support or impede the implementation of your recommendations. Factors may be based on personal experience or on information you found in your research. If the identified factors come from the literature, provide reference citations to support your ideas.
