Overview
Consider the many ways that modern popular culture influences society—locally, regionally, and globally. Think about the ways that society continuously influences popular culture. Also, keep in mind that the ways in which society views social issues, such as race, sexuality, free speech, violence, and social and economic class, are influenced by how these issues are portrayed within popular culture artifacts/expressions. And conversely, popular culture is influenced by these same issues by societal views.
In this Competency, you will engage in the fascinating process of analyzing the relationship between social values and popular culture. As you do, you will be challenged by the following questions:
Does popular culture change society’s values or does popular culture reflect the values already present in society?
What role does popular culture play in defining what is normal, what is cool, and what is unacceptable?
What is the relationship between an individual’s moral compass and that person’s collaboration with cultural expression?
Why does analysis of the relationship between social values and popular culture need to take into consideration areas of the world, specific communities, and time periods?
In other words, the relationship between social values and popular culture is complex and thought provoking.

Competency Statement: Analyze the relationship between social values and popular culture.st as society has changed over time, so have views on social issues. On the classic television show, I Love Lucy, which aired from 1951–1957, the title character Lucy is married to Ricky, yet their marital bedroom had two single beds. Keep in mind that at this time, it was considered indecent to discuss or infer sexual relations and pregnancy in a public form such as television. So, despite the actress’s power to negotiate her pregnancy into the storyline, the network made the decision to portray husbands and wives sleeping in separate beds and forbade the word “pregnant” from entering the scripts as it was considered vulgar. In this case, the popular culture artifact/expression reflected the societal values of the time—at least those of the network executives, thus, reinforcing contemporary social expectations. Compare this to the sexuality on display in the television show Game of Thrones (airing 2011–2019), which has shown the inside of brothels with multiple nude women and men walking around and/or having contact with principal characters. And this is not the only sexual content that is depicted. Does the sexuality in this series reflect society’s more open views on this social issue? Or, is the series pushing society to accept more sexuality than is currently considered acceptable?
As you review the resources for this module, consider how hip-hop can be seen as an extension of the civil rights movement, how popular culture artifacts/expressions steeped in social conservatism could be rewritten to portray social liberalism, and how social issue messaging changes over time.

n May 4, 1970, four college students were killed and nine injured when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire during a protest against the Vietnam War on the campus of Kent State University. This shooting of U.S. students exercising their right to free speech by a division of the U.S. military of was shocking to many. The event was a leading news story on television and in the print media. Although, historians cannot agree on the details leading to the shootings, they do agree that this was a watershed moment in the shifting of public support away from U.S. military activity in Southeast Asia and President Nixon. As a response to this event, the musician Neil Young wrote a song titled “Ohio” and within weeks he, along with his bandmates Crosby, Stills, and Nash, recorded it. The song was still popular years later. As you review the following resources, consider why songs remain popular and continue to attract audiences even though the events might have been forgotten. Also, think about how songs can revive both memories and questioning.
