RESPOND TO CHUKWUEMEKA POST

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all (United Nations, n.d.a). The goals address the global challenges including poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation (United Nations, n.d.a). The difference between a roadmap and menu about the SDGs is that the 17 goals are the roadmap which gives the direction and guide to achieving prosperity and sustainable development. The SDGs are not a menu where you chose which is delicious and leave some implying that you cannot choose some goals and leave some goals. The 17 goals are interconnected and achieving sustainable development includes gender equality. The education of children and women, access to healthcare, and economic empowerment will improve the health and wellbeing of children and women, and advance equity. Collaboration and partnership are important in achieving their goals. The strategy of the Women Deliver is to form a partnership with many organizations and collaborate with the organizations to advocate for the girls, women, and marginalized people to increase investment in gender equality and improve their health and wellbeing (World Deliver, n.d.). The goals that are connected to health include goal 4 quality education, goal 5 gender equality, goal 6 clean water and sanitation, goal 8 decent work, and economic growth, and goal 10 reduced inequalities (United Nations, n.d.a).

Goal 3 is Good health and wellbeing and ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to sustain development (United Nations, 2020). COVID-19 pandemic is the cause of morbidity and mortality in many countries. This goal is important because good health and well being for all regardless of race, and ethnicity, nationality, gender, economic and political status, and age will help improve global health, and advance health equity. Two targets for reaching these goals are achieving universal health coverage, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable medicines and vaccines for all (United Nations, 2020). Achieving universal health coverage, access to health care services and access to safe and affordable medications and vaccines will result in improved health outcomes, and advance health equities. By 2030, ending the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, combat hepatitis, and water-borne diseases. Achieving these two targets is critical to achieving the goal of good health and wellbeing for all (United Nations, 2020). This will help reduce the global burden of diseases and reduce morbidity and mortality caused by these diseases. The two actions I will take to help make progress toward reaching the SDGs as a global society are vaccinating myself and my family and biking, walking, and taking public transport (United Nations, n.d.b). Vaccinating myself and my family will help prevent diseases like influenza. Biking, walking, and taking public transport will help reduce the number of vehicles on the road, reduce air pollution, and improve health and wellbeing. Biking and walking will help to reduce obesity, reduce the risk of diabetics and heart disease, and improve health and wellbeing.

CASE STUDY ON SDG1-NO POVERTY

Case study on SDG 1- No Poverty.

Please review the case study and share your reflections for the questions listed below:

SEWA: Self Employed Women’s Association

Imagine you were from a poor community and a woman somewhere in India. You have four children and happen to be the primary breadwinner of your family. What if you have very few skills and fail to get into employment that would meet your needs. In all probability, you are forced to work as a domestic worker, a hawker, a street vendor or a construction laborer. These options earn very little or no money. This means that you are self-employed and work in the informal sector. So far so good. What if you were exploited, however? This could mean that you are made to work long hours, are paid less than you are due, or even paid irregularly and worse, and are paid nothing at all. What if you were harassed for selling vegetables on the streets? Remember, that until recently there were no laws to protect those in informal employment. These are real challenges for a poor woman and inhibit her from getting into decent employment that can actually help her escape poverty through her hard work. Evidently, poor people need capital or an ability to raise capital from savings, credit, and insurance to have incomes that meet their needs and also allow them to purchase or acquire assets like a sewing machine, a house, cattle, a pushcart, etc. This reduced the risk of relapsing into poverty for a variety of reasons. Women needed to have knowledge, information, and skills of the trade and management to succeed in the market. They needed security in terms of health and child care to be able to ward off risks. Last but not the least, they needed collective strength to be heard and address their own needs in a meaningful way.

Studies show that women could increase their incomes through gainful employment due to credit and acquisition of skills and capacities. All this, ultimately, helped women find more self-esteem and confidence to conduct their businesses more effectively. But today, there are indeed many such women! And they earn more than 12,000 INR a month! How was that possible? Through SEWA, a collective of women, founded in 1972 in Ahmedabad, a city in the western state of Gujarat in India by Ela Ben Bhatt women are finding better employment prospects. Ela Bhatt started SEWA with women who worked outside the textile mills with no formal source of income. The association now has nearly two million members. SEWA’s main goals are to organize women workers for full employment and self-reliance and lift them out of their poverty. Women had faced a variety of problems – wages were suppressed, there were fewer opportunities of full time, and continuous employment and employment conditions were not always favorable. SEWA carefully examined the kind of support that women need to reach a state of full employment. It looked at an integrated approach which involves

1. Capital
2. Capacity
3. Social security
4. Collective and organized strength.

Questions to reflect and respond:

1. What are the four components identified by SEWA to address poverty?
2. Did SEWA’s initiatives address “income poverty” or „multidimensional poverty”?
3. What would you propose to the government of your country by learning from the SEWA example for a poor community?
4. What role can education and training play in enhancing the capacities of communities?
5. Poverty is a classic chicken and egg situation. How did SEWA break this vicious cycle for women?

HERE IS A EXAMPLE OF HOW THE STUDENT ANSWER THE QUESTION TO THE
CASE STUDY:

Case study on SDG 1- No Poverty.
What are the four components identified by SEWA to address poverty?

I believe the Self -Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) identified health, economic capability, self-reliance, and employment as components to address poverty.

Did SEWA’s initiatives address “income poverty” or „multidimensional poverty”?

SEWA initiatives address multidimensional poverty. It addresses poverty at all levels which include income security, health care, housing, and food security.

What would you propose to the government of your country by learning from the SEWA example for a poor community?

I originated from a third world country in Africa and the conditions of the women in Ahmedabad, India before SEWA was found in 1972 are not different from the women in my country Cameroon, Central Africa. I would suggest that my government follow the example of SEWA. The majority of women in rural areas depend on agriculture for their livelihood. These women farm and sell their products to neighboring markets and villages. Some of these women farms in lands that belong to different owners and so they have to pay the landowners rents for these farms and then whatever is left belongs to them. With this said, I would propose to the government of my country to help fund cooperation were women in a small farming business and small business owners could save and borrow money at very minimal interest to expand and sustain whatever small business they are doing.

What role can education and training play in enhancing the capacities of communities?

According to Preece (2006), education can be a powerful tool for empowerment and building capacity and capabilities to challenge inequalities. Education is one factor that can aid in the improvement of poverty and socio-economic growth. Training is important because it covers essential work-related skills and knowledge to improve communities.

Poverty is a classic chicken and egg situation. How did SEWA break this vicious cycle for women?

SEWA was formed with the goal of empowering poor women to attain full employment and self-reliance (SEWA, 2006). SEWA breaks the vicious cycle of poverty for women by making them self-reliant and autonomous. SEWA made them economically dependent on decision making with assistance from the joint action of unions and cooperatives (SEWA, 2006).

PROFESSOR POST ADDRESS WOMEN’S HEALTH

We often address women’s health only using gender-disaggregated data. However, “A women’s perspective on health issues involves an analysis based on knowledge of broader gender differences than those that can be attributed to biology alone. Women and men live in different lives. It is therefore important to evaluate whether women’s health issues are disfavored by known health burden estimators in general use.” (Sundby, 1999). What are your thoughts on the concept of measuring health burdens from a women’s health perspective? While reviewing the disability-adjusted life year (DALY), do you find that the data presented addresses the social inequity within populations, and women’s health priorities? Why yes or why not? Please support your response.

Writing Assessment

Writing Assessment

  1. Earlier today (Monday), you received a call from an FBI agent who wanted to know the status of a grand jury subpoena she said she had submitted to Amazon two months ago. The FBI agent, who is based in New York, said the information requested in the subpoena – the names and addresses of those Amazon customers who had purchased a certain chemical product from a third-party seller – was needed so that the prosecutor, also based in New York, could present his case to the grand jury and seek an indictment against individuals who the FBI agent said had ties to terrorism.  When asked for more details about the subpoena, the agent provided the return date specified in the subpoena (28 days ago) and said that it was sent by another FBI agent who has since retired.  You did not ask for the retired agent’s name, the name of the prosecutor, or any other information – but you did get the phone number for the FBI agent who had called.  You told the FBI agent that Amazon would look into it and get back to her.

  1. After the call ended, you searched for the agent’s name on the Internet, but was unable to find any indication that someone by that name worked for the FBI. You also performed a search for the subpoena in Amazon’s LER database, but was unable to identify a subpoena that matched the one described by the FBI agent.  At this point it was late in the day, so you emailed the rest of the LER team and asked if anyone had seen or otherwise knew about the subpoena.  You then went home.

  1. The next day (Tuesday), having not received any feedback from any of the other LER specialists, you called the FBI agent in New York. You told the agent that Amazon had no record of the subpoena and asked how the subpoena was sent to Amazon.  In response, the agent got agitated and said: “This is ridiculous.  I sent the subpoena to you two months ago, and now you’re telling me you didn’t get it?  Isn’t your company the same company that mastered e-commerce, created the Echo, and has a CEO who is about to send people on rides to outer space – and you’re telling me you’ve lost my subpoena?  I did tell you that this is a terrorism case – if we don’t arrest these bad guys soon, people could die.”  You told that the agent although all of those things might be true, it still didn’t change the fact that Amazon never got the agent’s subpoena.  The agent then ended the call, but not before telling you that she would be escalating the matter within the FBI, and that “higher-ups” at Amazon could expect to hear from her supervisors about this.  You then met with the LER manager and relayed the information set forth above.

  1. Write an email to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation & Regulatory, informing him as to what transpired and recommending any next steps or action items you deem appropriate under the circumstances.
