write an argumentative essay on David Wood’s Moral Injury

please strictly follow the instructions and get close to the text as the evidence.

DIRECTIONS: Choose one of the questions below, and write an argumentative essay on David Wood’s Moral Injury. When you write an argumentative essay, you take a stand on a debatable issue; at the heart of every argument is a claim or thesis with which people may reasonably disagree. You are not to assume that your audience already agrees with you; instead, you are to expect the reader to be skeptical of your point of view. Your goal is to try to convince the reader to change his/her mind on the given topic.

You are to focus on textual support (explain the meaning of specific passages, dialogue, character motivations, character interaction with others, etc.) from the various materials we have read, seen, and heard about moral injury and PTSD to make your argument. you will be evaluated on how well you present a thesis and support it with close analysis. I am calling for thoughtfulness and expression. Take your time, and explain your thought process.

QUESTIONS:
1) Inform the general public what they should know about moral injury. As part of your explanation, you should distinguish between moral injury from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). What role does the public share in the moral injuries of soldiers?
2) Some military leaders believe that they can prepare soldiers/officers to handle morally questionable situations, and hence they believe that at the very least they possibly can curb moral injury among their military personnel. Do you agree that such a preemptive approach is possible?

Only pick one of the two questions above.

Please read the moral injury and focus on some sentences as evidence to support your ideas. please read three parts of moral injury, please. here is the link https://projects.huffingtonpost.com/moral-injury. Also, you can check the presentations I provided to get some better ideas about moral injury and the difference from the PTSD.

There is also some link about some moral injury stuffs which are recommended to add in the easy. I would like you to take a look on them. The video speech is kind of important and also the government army moral code.

Case study: Carpe Diem Fund Management Ltd

Case Study

Carpe Diem Fund Management Ltd.

A successful fund and investment management company, by the name of Carpe Diem Fund Management Ltd., had a good track record of choosing the right investments – those that had positive returns – during the past number of years, through the middle of 2019. They were concerned about the stock market’s volatility and wanted to begin diversifying so they would not be as susceptible to swings in the market as they had been in the past, and to hedge against the economic uncertainty they faced during the latter part of 2019. Top management was a competent group that consisted of several long term investors and traders in the market, but two of them had not had much formal education and training in financial analytical techniques that were being employed in the industry to support investment decision-making – one of them frequently referred to his “gut” as the source of inspiration for making important decisions as in “my gut is telling me…”. However, they had decided to look at a number of direct investment opportunities, one of which they would purchase outright, to initiate the diversification strategy.

Monica Moneybags, one of the primary financial analysts at Carpe Diem Fund Management Ltd., knew her education, training, and experience had put her in a good position to lead discussions and analysis concerning potential investments for the company’s portfolio, but now she had to utilize some skills that she had not used since her finance courses in graduate school. Executive management at Carpe Diem had decided to make direct investments in a venture, rather than just purchasing stock or providing capital in other forms. They were looking at four different target acquisitions, and had to make decisions in the next several weeks. It was up to Monica to complete the analysis, share her work papers and justify her recommendations. This was going to be a challenge for her, because two of the top managers were “street savvy” but no formal training or education concerning a number of the financial analytical techniques that Monica was going to utilize. One of them, Albert Ross, focused almost entirely on net income gains and rates of increase, and would be difficult to convince if she were to use other analytical techniques, which he sometimes referred to as financial “hocus-pocus” and often would not listen to the rationale supporting the methodology.

She had pulled together the basic information about the four proposals that were under consideration, and summarized them as follows:

Proposal 1

This proposal was to purchase a company that rented and serviced mailing and office machines. The company had been in business for over 4 years and was well-run, but needed capital or a “white knight” to invest or purchase the operation. The initial cost totaled $600,000 and was to be depreciated over a period of 20 years (straight line). They projected sales of over $1.443 million during the next five years, and almost $775,000 in aftertax earnings. See Figure 1 below for the data to be used in the analysis.

Proposal 2

The second proposal was to purchase a small plane to be located at a small executive airport nearby, and to be used by small business owners who had travel requirements that commercial airlines could not meet. These business operators were typically owners of growing and expanding businesses, and who needed to travel regionally on short notice. Other transportation alternatives such as commuter trains were not available and car services were too expensive and too slow (too much traffic). If successful, this concept might be considered for expansion to other cities of similar size that had good growth track records for small businesses.

Proposal 3

The third proposal involved the purchase and use of motor scooters for a courier system in the inner city. It was expected to be very competitive with other similar services, and might grow into the type of operation that could be expanded to other cities of similar size, using a direct investment or franchise model. The initial investment was estimated to be $296,000. The revenues were expected to grow substantially during the first four years, and then to level off as a result of anticipated competition entering the market and driving down rates.

Proposal 4

The final proposal under consideration involved the utilization of small vehicles for deliveries in a metropolitan center. The plan was to purchase a number of them and use them to more easily maneuver in congested traffic in downtown areas, and the revenue during the first two years of operation was expected to be substantial. This really generated a lot of attention from Albert.

The plan was to present the information about each proposal in summary, develop a thorough analysis using appropriate financial analytical techniques and methodologies, and to anticipate the questions and concerns that would arise during the discussions with the executive management group. The only constraints were related to the amount of funds they had available for investment – they did not want to borrow at this juncture – and that they could only support one project given the limited availability of seasoned managers to run the project they ultimately chose. It had been determined that the cost of capital was 10% at the time, and that this rate should be used in any analysis.

Monica knew that she should use at least three capital budgeting techniques:

  • Payback (PB)
  • Internal rate of return (IRR)
  • Net present value (NPV)

She was generally familiar with the techniques (she really wished she had given more attention to the capital budgeting techniques and rationale covered in her finance courses in her graduate degree program, but was reasonably confident that she could explain them clearly). She was more concerned that none of these would appeal to Albert, who had always been focused on accumulated earnings (increase in aftertax income). She had tried to convince Albert that the net present value method was the best approach, but he did not understand it and called it “mumbo-jumbo” and “hocus-pocus” finance. She nevertheless prepared her analysis and felt assured that she could convince the executive management group which project would be in the firm’s best interest and create the most value, and that Albert would listen to others if her presentation was clear and concise, and if the others understood.

The calculations are presented in an attachment (spreadsheet) for your review and use.

Case Questions

  1. Albert Ross admittedly focused on the level of earnings, and particularly the increase in aftertax income of each project (proposal). Which proposal do you think Ray will be focused on, and provide reasons/an explanation for your answer.

f

  1. The first method Monica is to present is the payback technique. See the computations in the attachment (spreadsheet), and note the how PB is approximated using the proportion of the year to the nearest decimal place (i.e., 3.4 years).
  2. Which proposal should they select, given the requirements for the payback method?
  3. What are the primary disadvantages of this method, and why might it be appealing to an untrained investor?

  1. The next method Monica presented is the net present value (NPV) technique. Review the NPV calculated in the spreadsheet for each proposal and rank the proposals. Which proposal should be selected, based on the ranking?

  1. The next method in her presentation is the internal rate of return (IRR). Rank the projects on the basis of their IRR’s in the attached spreadsheet.
  2. Which proposal should they select, based on the criteria of IRR?
  3. What are the primary disadvantages of using the IRR method?
  4. If there were an unlimited capital budget, which projects should Carpe Diem invest in, based on the IRR criteria?
  5. If any are to be excluded, why?

  1. Do the IRR and NPV methods reject the same proposals? Discuss briefly.

  1. Given the limitations and recommendations from academicians, which proposal should you choose, and why?

Essay 4: Technology and memory

Essay 4: Technology and memory
On a simple level, many of us recognize that we no longer remember anyone’s telephone number, and that the cellphone in our pockets makes it unnecessary to remember how to navigate or the name of flowers and birds, or how to calculate a restaurant tip. On what seems like science fiction, whole brain emulation may eventually enable the uploading of a person’s consciousness, including memory, into a computer. Although many people value these technological advances that may seem to make our lives more convenient, others see this as a dehumanizing trend that will damage both society and the individual. For this essay you will take a stand for or against the use of some form of memory-enhancing technology. In order to strengthen your argument, you will need to use some research to explain what this technology is and to give some evidence about what its effects have been or will be.

Brainstorm. Look over the post I’ve done on Readings for Essay 4, and try some googling of your own. Think about the ways you use technology to help you remember things you would otherwise have to memorize. I encourage you to pick an area that you’re interested in, and hopefully one that does not overlap too much with the other topics you’ve chosen for your other essays. You may focus on one particular piece of technology or several related ones.

Find some sources. Look for information you could use to support your proposal (or to get ideas for what proposal you wish to offer). Your sources may do the following:

give some background information about the technology you’ve chosen
establish some of the positive and/or negative effects of this technology
Remember to rely not just on search engines but also the library’s databases and book collection. You will need at least three credible sources; at least two of these must either be in print or have originally appeared in print. Note that articles from research databases almost always qualify as “originally in print,” as do articles you find online from sites like the New York Times, Wired, or any other magazine, journal or newspaper’s online site. (You cannot use three websites, no matter how credible they appear. Note that Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for college-level research.)

Compile a tentative Works Cited page. List your sources in MLA format. Be sure to consider the credibility of the sources you choose to use. How can you tell it’s reliable info? Look at where and when the source was published, the credentials of the author, the objectivity of the organization involved. Look for sources that are “meaty,” with lots of useful information.

Organize your argument. The core of this project will be your claim about the value or damage caused by this technology. Once you’ve digested the information in your sources, decide which side you support. Free-write or bullet point the reasons you hold this position. What details could you use to support or develop or explain those reasons? Write a tentative thesis statement that gives your claim along with the strongest several reasons you have come up with. Make sure that your claim is specific and realistic (though more scientific advancement may be necessary). What background information would it be necessary or useful to provide to your reader? What would be the counterargument of people who disagree with you, and how would you address their concerns?

A standard organization of this essay would be to give some introductory info in the first paragraph, and close that paragraph with your thesis statement. This will be one sentence taking the position that robots should or should not be used in this application, along with a brief explanation of your reasoning. Additional background info may appear next, if necessary. Then develop several paragraphs that give the reasons for the superiority of robots over humans or vice versa. The next section typically will address the counterargument along with your concession or rebuttal. (See the resources listed under the “Argue” tab at the top of blog for further explanation of these terms.)

Draft. The target length of your essay should be about three pages (or 1000 words). Focus on a clear structure, and make sure your reasons are supported by evidence from your sources, cited according to MLA guidelines.

CRITERIA FOR GRADING:

a strong thesis statement makes an arguable claim
focused, unified, and coherent paragraphs that give a logical framework for your argument
use of specific details to provide evidence for your reasons
quality of your sources
proper MLA documentation

Evaluative essay

Write an approximately three-page evaluative essay on the following topic, which should be about 1000 words. It must respond to the essay prompt and be informed by course material. While consultation of outside-of-class material is acceptable.

Write an evaluative essay on racism and Boxill’s “The Color Blind Principle.” As part of your essay, 1) define racism, and 2) explain the two varieties of racism, personal and institutional. After these preliminaries, 3) evaluate Boxill’s proposal in “The Color Blind Principle” that not being able to choose to identify characteristics about oneself is irrelevant for justice (cf the responsibility criterion). In your evaluation, demonstrate an understanding of his argument, basic ethical concepts, and course material more broadly. 4) Finally, offer at least one plausible argument for or against Boxill’s previously mentioned position that demonstrates an understanding of it.

Context:
It has been said that time is money. In planning change to positively influence outcomes, it is important that you be able to quickly and concisely articulate your ideas. An executive summary is a short document that summarizes a more in-depth report. Think of it in terms of a public service announcement or commercial in which you must grab the attention of the stakeholders in order for your project to become a priority.

An executive summary enables you to provide the executive-level leaders with a brief but effective overview of what you have determined is a need, a change, or an enhancement for the organization. A succinct, informative summary linked to the organization’s strategic plan will improve your chances of obtaining stakeholder support.

Questions to consider:
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

Building stakeholder support is crucial to fostering and sustaining change. Therefore, as you approach this assessment, think about the stakeholders whose support you will need for the change you want to bring about.

What information is most essential for both the formal and informal stakeholders to understand about the proposed change?
How might you communicate the need for change using just a few sentences (this is often referred to as an “elevator speech”).

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria: Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the Executive Summary Scoring Guide. Be sure that your written analysis addresses each point, at a minimum.
Competency 1: Analyze quality and safety outcomes from an administrative and systems perspective.
Explain key quality and safety outcomes.
Analyze the relationships between a systemic problem in an organization and specific quality and safety outcomes.
Competency 2: Determine how outcome measures promote quality and safety processes within an organization.
Determine how specific outcome measures support strategic initiatives related to a quality and safety culture.
Competency 3: Determine how specific organizational functions, policies, processes, procedures, norms, and behaviors can be used to build reliability and high-performing organizations.
Determine the strategic value to an organization of specific outcome measures.
Competency 4: Synthesize the various aspects of the nurse leader’s role in developing, promoting, and sustaining a culture of quality and safety.
Determine how a leadership team would support the implementation and adoption of proposed practice changes affecting specific outcomes.
Competency 5: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.
Write clearly and concisely, using correct grammar and mechanics.
Integrate relevant and credible sources of evidence to support assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.

The Plague

What insights can we discover from Camus’ novel, The Plague, about moral motivations? This is best done by focusing one character (perhaps two, but not more—for the sake of focus). Of course, you can bring in points about or remarks/reflections by other characters, but your focus should likely be on one character. Almost all of you will include Rieux to some degree in your paper, at least as a “foil” to shed light on the character you are focusing on, and Rieux himself could also serve as the main focus. But you could also focus on Tarrou, Rambert, Paneloux or Cottard. I don’t think we have enough about M. Othon for a focus, but he (or even Gonzales) could shine light on the person you do discuss.

Remember that the narrator, Dr. Bernard Rieux, perhaps with the author, Camus himself, is reluctant to endorse any specific moral principles, especially if such principles might pass judgment on individuals who are acting on behalf of a personal value that they deeply feel that gives meaning to their lives. This is why I suggest to focus on moral motivation,

My point above is also that positive judgments about moral motivations might be different from negative judgments about moral motivations. In other words, while what Rambert eventually decides to do might be morally praiseworthy, what he initially wants is not necessarily morally wrong. Remember that Rambert said he agreed to undergo whatever quarantine he needed to if he were allowed to leave (84). So he’s not simply irresponsible. But certainly what motivates him changes as the novel goes on, and this is interesting.

Tarrou comes the closest to articulating moral principles, but even he expresses them more in terms of motivation. His motivations are similar to Rieux’s, but in other ways also different and unique to Tarrou, as he tells his story. He discusses his motivations in their “hour off for friendship” and exemplifies them in his death, but he also finally says something about them at the very end of his first “interview” with Rieux (130). Tarrou could be a very interesting focus.

I don’t mean to dismiss Paneloux, but his understanding of his own moral motivation is very sadly lacking, in Camus’ view (and Camus’s imagination is the only place that Paneloux exists!) With Paneloux, I would guess that the real interesting part is how he changes (but maybe doesn’t change enough), as well as the gap between his conscious beliefs and his actions and emotions.

It seems obvious that an essay on Cottard would be mostly critical, focused on the inadequacy or wrong-headedness of his motivations, which are not moral, but at best amoral and likely even immoral. But he still would clearly fit the essay assignment.

I skipped Grand, Rieux’s (the narrator’s) “hero”! A good essay could be written on him, as sad a character as he is in many ways. Nevertheless, despite all his weirdness, he’s a good person. And a paper the analyzes him by reflecting on how he relates to Rieux, Tarrou, Cottard and above all, to Oran itself could be a good paper!

  3. to connect concepts you are learning in class material, with real-world issues.

You are to include the following in your assignment:

1. Article title and source – 5 points

  1. Using the MLA style of citation, where did you get the article? Important note – the citation must be in MLA style for full credit
  2. For this assignment, you must include the url in your citation.

2. Summary – 5 points

Briefly and in your own word, summarize the content of the article. Important note – the summary must be in your own words.

3. Connection 1 – 15 points

Connect the article to a concept we have covered in class from Chapters 4, 5, or 7 PowerPoints ( I have attached three PowerPoints). Important Note – the concept has to be from the three PowerPoints I have attached.

  1. Define the concept that you state the article connects to.
  2. Describe how the article illustrates the concept.

4. Connection 2 – 15 points

Connect the article to any additional concept we have covered in class.
