Discussion Paper

This LU covered the 1970s through the early 1990s and saw a number of developments including the end of the Cold War, great social and cultural contests, and the rise of the “New Right” within American politics. Let’s dive in. Once again, pick between two of these prompts:

A. Consider Document 15 and 16. These sources are from the years following Watergate, when many Americans had lost faith in government and the country was gripped by stagflation. Reflect on the three voices you encounter in these two documents as you answer the following:

What is the problem facing America and what is the solution to fixing it? Compare how the three authors in Doc 15 and 16 speak to this. Additionally: do you think any of these problems they describe are still relevant today, more than forty years on? Support your response with your sources

Bandag Automotive Case

Bandag Automotive Case:

This case highlights some of the challenges a growing company faces, in particular when there is a change in leadership.  Bandag Automotive is a family-owned business that has recently shifted leadership from Jim’s father to Jim. Jim’s focus on the bottom-line ignores some of the long-term costs of poor human resource (HR) management practices.  In the absence of a leader with HR expertise, Jim faces several employment-related legal challenges including those involving the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family Medical Leave Act.  Jim also cut benefit offerings in the interest of cost savings without exploring the impact on the organizational culture and employee performance.

Questions:

  • Given Bandag Automotive’s size, and anything else you know about it, should they reorganize the human resource management function, and if so, why and how?

  • What, if anything, would you do to change and/or improve upon the current HR systems, forms, and practices that we now use?

  • Do you think that the employee whom Jim fired for creating what the manager called a poisonous relationship has a legitimate claim against us, and if so, why and what should we do about it?

  • Is it true that we really had to put Gavin back into an equivalent position, or was it adequate to just bring him back into a job at the same salary, bonuses, and benefits as he had before his leave?

Complete and correct works cited page
DO NOT include annotations with works cited entries
Proofread, revised, and free of major errors of standard written English
Adheres to all written instructions of assignment detailed below

Purpose—-
In the first phase of this course, you summarized and critiqued an article. In the second phase of this course, you observed and profiled a specific food dish or product. Now, your task is to craft a formal proposal for a specific physical space. You should first identify a specific space, then observe, analyze, and evaluate it. Identify problems and questions for research. Then, you should propose a specific idea for the space that either solves a problem you’ve identified or perhaps would improve sociability, accessibility, inclusivity, equity, or commerce.
Your proposal should take the form of a formal report.
accurate, well-researched information: your observations
synthesis of ideas: your primary observations, proposals, and ideas from secondary sources
various writing strategies: report, cause and effect, argument, proposal, profile, reflection, process analysis, etc.
clear definition of key terms
appropriate design: images, tables, diagrams
a well-defined problem based on your firsthand observation (note this doesn’t have to be something “wrong” per-say but also how something can be improved)
a recommended solution and convincing argument for solution/recommendation or call to action
response to anticipated questions (consider counterarguments and questions about practicality and feasibility of solutions/recommendations)
an appropriate tone: formal, reasonable, academic

Context and Purpose for Writing—-
You must first determine your topic and purpose. Then, you need to identify parallels (related ideas) between your firsthand observations and the research from your sources. As you outline, you should develop a plan for how to develop and present your proposal. You should use subheadings to use to organize your document as in formal reports (see textbook).

Topic—-
In weeks 4-5, we’ll read about issues related to public and social spaces. We’ll consider how these spaces appeal to certain demographics and their impact on the economy and culture of the local community.
Write about the following:
Select a specific physical space and explain one or two ways it is affected by the pandemic and how these problems can be solved.

Sources and Evidence—-
Integrates at least four different types of sources (you should use no more than five sources in this paper) through summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation:
At least TWO of the sources in your paper MUST come from posted course material (i.e. things posted in this course). It could be a podcast, video, or published article.
Two secondary sources from a reputable source with an informative or persuasive purpose (such as NPR, The New York Times, Eater, Vox, The Atlantic, or The New Yorker). Sources should be full-length, published articles. Sources should be published within the last four years. These sources could be from content posted for this course (including optional content) and may include a podcast or video. The source must be published in a peer-reviewed, academic journal. The source must be more than five pages long. Look through hyperlinks from assigned course readings to find relevant scholarly sources or use ones posted in course readings. You must properly introduce, summarize the scholarly source, include the title of the academic journal and discuss the source in detail. Identify what database you used (if any) to find the source in your works cited entry.
Effectively Integrating Scholarly Sources: What was researched? What discipline was the article written for (psychology, sociology, law, etc.)? Explain how the research is relevant to your discussion and other sources. Try to identify a specific theory or conclusion from the scholarly article to focus on. (Hint: You can find scholarly sources hyperlinked or sourced in published articles).
Integrate at least three blended and direct quotes in your essay with a proper signal phrase and in-text citation where necessary.
Quotations should make up no more than 24% of your paper. Only ONE block quote is allowed.
At least TWO of the sources in your paper MUST come from posted course material (i.e. things posted in this course).

Visuals—
Include two or more visuals (images, tables, charts, or graphs) that you take or create yourself
You may also include other visuals (images, tables, chart or graphs) from research sources

Let me know if any other questions ! This is very important , I also attached lots of sample papers of what the paper should look like !

3.2 Discussion: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis

3.2 Discussion: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis

 Getting Started

When conducting research in social science, there inevitably comes a time when something must be measured in some way (i.e., some unit of analysis must be applied.) In most cases, this will involve numbers, also referred to as quantitative analysis because quantities are being interpreted. This stands in stark contrast to qualitative analysis, which is based on qualities or specific, observable characteristics to distinguish units of analysis. As you might imagine, qualitative analysis, therefore, usually relies on the use of words and explanations instead of numbers.

An immense area of quantitative research in social science involves the gathering of statistics and, in turn, performing some analysis of those statistics. Many of us may be familiar with statistics from the sports world, such as a batting average in baseball, which tells you how often a player has ended up on base or with a run, as opposed to being out. The analysis of data is a core requirement in academic research, so let us take a closer look at the role of numbers, data, and statistics.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the differing benefits and limitations of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Resources

  • Textbook: The Practice of Social Research
  • Media: Introduction to Statistics: Definitions/Terminology(Found online)
  • Media: Descriptive Statistics: Part 1(Found online)
  • Media: Descriptive Statistics: Part 2 (Found online)

Background Information

At this point in the course, you have a basic grasp of the way numbers work in research, it is worthwhile to explore the value of this numeric approach to conducting research in relation to more conventional, qualitative, or descriptive-based avenues for our analysis. Both quantitative and qualitative strategies for conducting research are useful, however, and can be used (often in tandem) to answer a research question, but the extent to which you would rely on one or the other approach depends on the nature of the specific question that you are examining. Accordingly, an economics study on fluctuations in rates of international currency trading may necessarily be heavily quantitative, whereas a study on the factors involved in foreign policy decision making during international crises may have to use mostly qualitative research. Thus, a discussion of the merits and limitations of these two approaches serves to inspire greater confidence in utilizing these approaches for our assignments and our research.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Read the following chapters in your textbook, The Practice of Social Research:
    1. Chapter 6, “Indexes, Scales, and Typologies”
    2. Chapter 7, “The Logic of Sampling”
  3. Read the following CourseConnect presentations from Statistics:
    1. Lesson 1, Introduction to Statistics: Definitions/Terminology
    2. Lesson 2, Descriptive Statistics: Part 1
    3. Lesson 3, Descriptive Statistics: Part 2
  4. After reviewing these three lesson presentations on statistics, hopefully you are beginning to learn more about their value and how they might be collected. Navigate to the threaded discussion and respond to the following prompts:
    1. Which do you find more useful in attempting to reveal truth or a deeper understanding about a topic: qualitative or quantitative research? Why?
    2. Do you think every example of scientific research must have an element of quantitative analysis to be considered valid? Why or why not?
    3. What are the limits of numbers applied in this way? What are some things that numbers might simply not be able to capture?
    4. Your posts should be between 200 and 300 words long.
    5. Use at least two scholarly resources. References should be added at the end of your post.
  5. Your postings also should:
    1. Be well developed by providing clear answers with evidence of critical thinking supported by at least two academic sources.

assessment skills

During this course, students have completed a comprehensive physical assessment, which included taking a patient history and evaluating for at-risk behavior. What new assessment skills did you develop in the course, or how did the assessment assignments in Shadow Health help you build on your assessment skills? How do you plan to integrate these new assessment skills into your professional practice? How do you plan to integrate the necessary skills for assessing the readability of health education materials into your practice? In your journal assignment, reflect on your learning regarding the importance of health literacy in patient health and well-being.

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale category 3 or above

1. For the year 2004 or later, research and identify a major (Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale category 3 or above) hurricane that made landfall in the United States. After identifying a storm, use the National Hurricane Center’s data archive website, to review the report for this storm in the Tropical Cyclone Reports section, and to review data and graphics for this storm in the Tropical Cyclone Advisory Archive section.

After doing some research, construct an engaging 3-paragraph initial post on this storm that addresses the following:

• Paragraph 1: Summarize the storm track and its impacts (graphics will add greatly to the discussion here).
• Paragraph 2: Relate your summary in paragraph 1 to what you learned in module 9 about the various aspects of hurricanes.
• Paragraph 3: Give us “your take” on the relevance and importance of your discussion in paragraphs 1 and 2 from your own perspective – personal points of view or related experiences, for example.
