OPTIMIZATION OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE THREADING TOOLS THROUGH LASER-GENERATED MICROSTRUCTURES

– Discipline : manufacturing engineering

PhD Title: “Optimization of high-performance tapping tools using laser-generated microstructures”

My PhD objective is to eliminate the chip snarling effects through laser structured surfaces on rake surface (based on this patent – https://patents.google.com/patent/DE102016113571A1/en?inventor=florin+milas&oq=florin+milas ) which will work as a chip-breaker or to increase the friction coefficient and limit the wear. In this way I will be able to retain the cutting edge covered and still achieve ***short chips***. This will be my ‘optimization’ ….in short terms…. For achieving that, I must understand better the phenomena who occur in the tapping process.

Manuscript 1: “An experimental investigation on wear aspects of tapping operation on chrome-molybdenum steels”

Manuscript 2: “Optimization of high-performance tapping tools using laser-generated microstructures”

Keywords : tapping, laser generated surfaces, coatings, Ti(CN), wear, geometry, forces, torque, grooving, chip flow, chip evacuation, chip forming, chip snarling, chip curling

– Literature / Articles review : 70-80 sources – already on disposal.
– summarize, synthesize, and critique the sources by discussing a common them
– trace the intellectual progression of the field
– conclusion

Chapter 16 Homework Line Balancing Problems

Chapter 16 Homework Line Balancing Problems

Instructions:  Work the three problems from the attached file (Line Balancing) above labeled Chapter 16 Facility Layout Homework Problems. Formulas can be completed in Excel if it helps for computation purposes. Follow the 6 Steps: (example)

Step 1: Identify tasks and immediate predecessors (perfume spray filling and packaging line example in Table 16.1

Step 2: Determine output rate of final item (for example, 600 bottles per hour with 8 hours per shift).

Step 3: Determine cycle time (the amount of time each workstation is allowed to complete its tasks).

The throughput or capacity of this process is limited by the bottleneck task (the longest task in a process), which can be calculated as follows:

Step 4: Compute the theoretical minimum number of stations (that is, the number of stations needed to achieve 100% efficiency where every available second is used).

Note that you should always round up when calculating the number of workstations.

Step 5: Assign tasks to workstations.

Start at the first station and choose the longest eligible task following precedence relationships (that is, A must precede B, G must follow both E and F, and so on; see Table 16.2). Continue adding the longest eligible task that fits without going over the desired cycle time. Once no additional tasks can be added within the desired cycle time, assign the next task to the following workstation until finished.

(Table 16.2) Example – there should be a Line Balance table for each problem

Table 16.2 Perfume and Packaging Line Balancing Example: Assign Tasks to Workstations

Step 6: Compute efficiency and balance delay. The percent efficiency is the ratio of total task times divided by the number of workstations times the largest assigned cycle time (6 seconds for workstation 4).

Balance delay is the percentage by which the assembly line falls short of 100%.

Balance delay = 100% – 86.1% = 13.9%

Of course, Step 1 is provided for you.

Analyze the idea of making English the official language of the US

Analyze the idea of making English the official language of the US. It is not the official language, but many people believe that it is. Many states (including CA) have made English the official language:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Official_languages_of_U.S._states_and_territories

The specificity of this will allow you to talk about some of the (potentially) positive aspects of having an official language (Preece Jackson makes a theoretical argument along those lines), but you can also talk about how and why this can also be an effort to create a hierarchy of who is “truly” an American.

You could look into what other democracies have official languages to see the variety of approaches that are taken.

Need to site good sources. You might want to look at a more specific political debate to link the larger ideas to a specific policy. Take a look at Geertz’s article to see how he describes the political dynamics of primordialism.

Key things to talk about: nationalism, definition of nationalism, primordialism and whatever else you can pull from what I said up there ^

PSY 101: General Psychology

PSY 101: General Psychology
Spring 2020
Instructor: Dylan Campbell
Final Paper Instructions
Due Friday, May 1st @ 11:59pm
For this assignment, you will write up a summary and critical analysis of a piece of recent research from the
field of experimental psychology, connecting it to theories and findings we’ve discussed in class.
Finding and selecting an article:
• The article you select to summarize/discuss must:
o Come from one of the following 3 journals:
§ Psychological Science (https://journals.sagepub.com/loi/pssa)
§ Journal of Experimental Psychology: General (https://psycnet.apa.org/journals/xge)
§ Journal of Applied Psychology (https://psycnet.apa.org/journals/apl)
o Have been published within the last year (so anything from April 2019-April 2020)
• Though you may find articles by browsing recent issues using the links provided above, you can also use
Google Scholar to search for articles (http://www.scholar.google.com) – click the 3 horizontal lines in
the top left corner to access ‘Advanced Search’ which will allow you to search within specific journals
and by specific years.
• You should be able to download the article you end up selecting through Google Scholar – if not, email
me and I will track down the article and send it to you (do this ASAP – if you wait until the night before
this is due then it won’t end up happening).
Requirements for the paper:
• Length and formatting: The paper should be between 700-1200 words (~2-4 pages, double-spaced).
You do not need to format this in APA style – I care more about correct grammar and spelling than the
paper being formatted following a particular style. If the article you selected reports more than one
study, you may focus your paper on just one of the reported studies.
• Content: Your paper will be graded on the extent to which it includes thoughtful and thorough answers
to the following questions:
o What is the purpose of the study/studies reported in the article (i.e., what predictions or
hypotheses are the researchers investigating?)
o What are the independent and dependent variables in the experiment (or, if the study is
correlational instead of experimental, what variables are being investigated via correlation)?
o Briefly describe the methods and results of the study in your own words.
o Are the results important? Why or why not?
o How do the results relate to theories and ideas we have discussed in class?
o Identify what you think are key strengths and weaknesses in the design of the study. Provide
suggestions for how you would change the study in order to improve it.
o What is your overall evaluation of the research reported in the article? What would you have
done differently and why?
Submission: You will submit (1) a .pdf of the research article you’re writing about and (2) your paper as a
word document in a similar manner to the homework assignments (through the submission portal on Canvas by
attaching these files) before the due date noted above.

the veil of ignorance

For those behind the veil of ignorance, Rawls argues that “it is an open question whether the principle of utility would be acknowledged” (TOJ, p.296). Explain and evaluate Rawls’s claim here. In doing so, explain the relevant terms and say whether you think Rawls is right that deliberators in the original position would reject utilitarianism as a principle of distributive justice.
