Job Talk Assignment

The Job Talk Assignment 2: Organizational Plan
During the job interview process, the purpose of a job talk is to reveal how well you fit in as a team member and colleague with an organization’s culture.
The job talk begins with the cover letter.
Why is the Job Talk important?

The way you should think about your Job Talk is that it is a single opportunity to impress your potential colleagues and employers.

The job talk is a way for you to introduce yourself, demonstrate and highlight your career skills, and thank the hiring committee for taking the time to meet with you.

What is the Job Talk about?
The Job Talk is about you. But you have to frame it in such a way that it promotes how your skills fit excellently with the position that you are seeking. The content of your Job Talk must reflect why you are
the best candidate for the position, describe your connection with the job you are seeking as well as with the organization for which you will be working.

With the Job Talk You are Demonstrating

• Your communication skills and that you can interact well with people
• Your confidence in yourself
• That you can give an engaging presentation
• Your potential as a prospective team member with this organization.

Crafting an Interesting Presentation
• Engage your audience. Let them know you are interested in them.
• Do not overload presentation with minute details – Make your main points count
• Don’t read to us!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• Don’t hide behind the podium (and/or make sure your webcam is optimally set to capture the best version of you)
• Dress appropriately (business casual)
• You must complete this job talk without the aid of a PowerPoint. You may have another visual but I caution you to be sure any visuals are relevant to your presentation.

For this assignment, you will write an organizational plan to follow when you give your presentation.
Use the handouts I have provided with the assignment to help you create your organizational plan. Those handouts are:
• Guide to writing your organizational plan for the Job Talk
• STAR Behavioral Technique for Responding to Interview Questions
• Common Job Interview Questions and the skills associated with those questions
• Sample Student Organizational Plans

Job Talk Assignment

Leaders and hiring personnel of businesses and organizations have predetermined the skill sets they require for applicants based on a detailed analysis of the position they are seeking to fill. These skill sets include: excellent written communication skills, the ability to speak so others understand, decision making and problem solving, leadership, motivation, communication, interpersonal skills, planning and organization, critical thinking skills, team building and the ability to influence others. In any interview situation, it is important to showcase your interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Some opportunities may also require you to give a brief presentation to demonstrate a job-related skill or provide work samples (e.g. a portfolio). In this Job Talk assignment, you will demonstrate your communication skills by discussing your qualifications for a chosen job opportunity. Specifically, you give an oral presentation that highlights the skills you have for a particular position to which you are “applying”.

Objectives                            Develop a clear, concise, extemporaneous speech to showcase relevant job skills.

Improve speaking ability (storytelling, eye contact, confidence etc.)

Use storytelling to engage audience.

Time Limit                           7 to 10 minutes

Presenters will have 10 points deducted for the earned grade for every 30

seconds  over 10 minutes. Presentations that are less than 7 minutes will be

considered incomplete and this will be reflected in your grade. Practice your presentation several times before presenting to be sure your timing is accurate.

General Purpose                  The general purpose of this assignment is to convince your audience (the members of a hiring team chosen by your potential employer) that you possess several skills that employers in your field

seek in their employees. You will also be demonstrating your ability to influence others with persuasion.

The Process                         Step 1     Conduct research and find a specific job opportunity in the field that you have chosen.

This is important. (You will do some of this work during Module 2 – Career Exploration Module) I do not want you to apply to some generic “Marketing” or

“Accounting” position. You have to be specific. For example you will apply for the

“Grants Administrator” position at the Brookings Institute. You will be expected to

answer specific questions about what the Brookings Institute is and be able to answer

questions about your role as a grants administrator.

Step 2     Conduct research to gain knowledge of:

  • The company to which you are applying.
  • The position to which you are applying.
  • The skills required of the position to which you are applying.

Step 3     Consider your past experiences (work, school, community), and brainstorm events or situations in which you may have demonstrated the skills required for the job.

Step 4     Based on the job posting and your brainstorm, choose at least 3 different skills to highlight in your Job Talk . Use the Questions and Skills Table to determine which questions are commonly asked to measure each of the skills you will discuss.

Step 5     Develop a written organizational plan for delivering your speech. You may use the Guide for writng your organizational plan for the Job Talk that I have attached with the assignment for you. You may find it useful to employ the STAR behavioral technique for interviewing: state the situation, describe the task, explain your actions and discuss the results of those actions. I have also included an explanation of that technique with the assignment for you.

Step 6     Practice your Job Talk – out lout – at least 50 times (if you want it to be good).

Step 7     Deliver your Job Talk

Method of Delivery                            Extemporaneous

  • Use storytelling to engage your audience
  • Professional, yet conversational tone
  • Should be practiced and well-prepared
  • Presentation should not be read from a page, or memorized.

Required Research                             You will search for and choose a career posting (job posting) during our Career Exploration Module. However, after you have had a few weeks of reflection, you may want to find a different career that is more suited to your career goals and interests. At any rate, you will spend a fair amount of time researching open career opportunities. Additionally, you will:

  • Research the company to which you are applying.
  • Research the skills necessary for the position to which you are applying. In addition research any information about the industry that is relevant and may enhance your understanding of the skills needed for the position.
  • Research your own history for examples of instances where you have demonstrated the skills being discussed.

Credibility                                           This entire presentation  is about establishing your credibility for an employer.

  • Business casual attire is required for this to enhance your credibility.
  • Reveal your character and personality.
  • Speak with enthusiasm

Written Orgnaizational Plan             Required: You must create a written organizational plan that will be turned in prior to

giving your Job Talk. There is an assignment posted in BlackBoard in the Job Talk Project folder that explains the process for writing this Organizational Plan (OP).

Speaking Notes                                   Recommended (with caution): You may use note cards for this .

  • Write only on one side of each note card and number them
  • Do NOT write your entire speech on your note cards.
  • Reading your story from note cards will negatively affect your credibility (and grade).

Public Health

Public health is placed at the intersection of major social, political, economic and cultural forces in society. The mission of public health is to create environments in which people can be healthy, and politics and activism is seen in the context of social values and interests. This further means, public health battles are often fought along political fronts as well as behavioral fronts. As such, improving public health requires an explicit commitment to advocating for policy changes that support the development of health-promoting environments. This position can be taken when advocating my state senator to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco to twenty-one. Advocating for a public health issue such as smoking to a state senator is very critical for the success of the issue and so, consistent and effective communication can provide the energy to achieving the goal.

The strategy that would be implemented in this scenario to ensure effective communication would be the strategy to create change; member and affiliate advocacy (American Public Health Association, 2016). I would start by understanding the issue of tobacco sales to youths and then would schedule a meeting with my state senator, and would invite other stakeholders that have an interest in this issue. In this meeting, we would let the senator know right away about the issue at hand, which is raising the tobacco purchasing age to twenty-one years. Personal stories will be used in this meeting as well. We will provide the senator with facts and figures about the danger tobacco use poses to youths and young adults. During this meeting, we would invite the senator to visit us, so that he can see first-hand, how youths buy tobacco and smoke without any policies in place, and the effects on their health. After this, we would then host a town-hall meeting to discuss this issue and the senator will also be invited. Advocating for systemic change in tobacco sales policies would be the main topic of discussion and we will offer our expertise to the senator. After this meeting, a letter will be mailed to the senator’s office on all the policy recommendations that were discussed during the town hall meeting. Another letter will be submitted to the op-ed of the local newspaper about this issue and this issue will be campaign all over social media for promotion.

An internal change agent

Identify a situation where you, as a manager or employee, acted as an internal change agent for your organization, group, team, etc. An internal change agent is someone who is is employed by the organization verses someone who is an external change agent serving as a professional consultant.

As an internal change agent, which organizational development strategies or techniques did you use? How effective were you in bringing about the change? Is there anything that you would do differently if given the same opportunity in the future?

Example:

I feel like my full time job in my unit is an internal change agent. Most times, the approaches I am required to use structural approaches to change. I’d imagine the military is like the civilian sector in many ways, especially in the way of policy and structure. For us, policy has a tendency to change slowly, whereas organizational changes can happen very quickly. Each unit I have integrated into, I have tried to make an impact on. Most times, that is reflected in a change of some sort to (hopefully) improve a process.

When I was stationed overseas, I was attached to a plans section for the installation I was assigned to. In this role, I coordinated all of the standard operating procedures and guidance for many different agencies assigned to the base. We had an office of 6-8 personnel (depending on time of year), and I was in charge of 4. My section, the plans section, was the busiest by far. The term “busiest” is relative, as there wasn’t much work to be done. Of the 4 employees I supervised, 2 of them were gainfully employed. There was a section that neighbored ours that handled dispute resolution and inspection type situations. They had a total of two personnel assigned, and they were swamped… All day, every day.

Within my 2nd month, I approached my boss and asked what we could do to change our structure. He was very guarded about his personnel, and didn’t think I should be recommending things being so new. He was actually right. I needed to slow down, and integrate more into the unit before I started making drastic suggestions. Eventually, we got to a point that we could move personnel, but because we took time and did it methodically, we moved them to the right spots and lightened the workload for another department. In the future, I would have been more patient, and given a lot more thought to an organizational change. There can be 2nd and 3rd order effects that are often overlooked if not considered critically in the moment.

ECON2251: Auditing and Assurance

SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT

Context

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) investigated the $5bn (£3.6bn) Autonomy accounting scandal. The audit watchdog alleged that Deloitte failed to properly audit the UK software company.

The complaints were against Deloitte (the firm) and two of its senior partners, Knights and Mercer, along with former Autonomy CFO Sushovan Hussain and former VP of finance Stephen Chamberlain.

On the first day of the tribunal the FRC claimed that Deloitte was “reckless”; that Knights had “consciously lost his objectivity” and become too close to the Autonomy director. The FRC also alleged that Knights had shown a “fundamental lack of professional scepticism” and accused him of failing to question Autonomy’s accounts.

“It is our case that Deloitte’s work fell clearly and seriously below the standards to be expected from it,” the FRC said. Knights started to “act and think as if he was himself an advocate for Autonomy. He lost his grip on his role as an impartial third-party auditor.”

Scenario:

You are a new audit manager in your professional practice. You recently attended a briefing from the Ethics Partner where the comments of the FRC about the Deloitte audit of Autonomy and others were discussed. Your firm is very aware of the increased scrutiny of audit by the media and the regulators and is aiming to ensure that the initial stage of client review and acceptance is explicitly robust.

As the audit manager for a FTSE client, you are reviewing the validity of your appointment as auditor. To help support the development of your audit team you have decided to summarise your findings in a poster.

Required:

POSTER

Summarise your review of the validity of your client appointment, showing your findings regarding the KEY issues of BOTH the client’s integrity and issues of professional ethics.

As the review into the reform of the audit market in the UK has continued, highlight ONE suggestion and show how this could affect your audit engagement with this client in the future. Do you believe this will enhance audit quality?

Note: You will be allocated your audit client and each of you will have a different client to review.

Your poster should be A3 (in electronic format) supported by any relevant appendices and references. This can use Powerpoint, Publisher or Word Formats but it should be readily legible (no smaller than 10 font) and designed to enable the reader to easily assimilate the information. You may use relevant design tools and colours etc. to aid in this communication

.

  1. i) Explore why you chose to discuss the specific audit reform in your poster and
  2. ii) Reflect upon how your research into these issues, your class discussions, your formative discussion and the discussions in the Accounting Forum have informed these views.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Your completed assignment must be uploaded to DUO
no later than 12:00 midday on 1 May 2020
.

A penalty will be applied for work uploaded after 12:00 midday as detailed in the Programme Handbook.  You must leave sufficient time to fully complete the upload process before the deadline and check that you have received a receipt. At peak periods, it can take up to 30 minutes for a receipt to be generated.

Assignments should be typed, using 1.5 spacing and an easy-to-read 12-point font. Assignments and dissertations/business projects must not exceed the word count indicated in the module handbook/assessment brief.

The word count should:

  • Include all the text, including title, preface, introduction, in-text citations, quotations, footnotes and any other items not specifically excluded below.
  • Exclude diagrams, tables (including tables/lists of contents and figures), equations, executive summary/abstract, acknowledgements, declaration, bibliography/list of references and appendices. However, it is not appropriate to use diagrams or tables merely as a way of circumventing the word limit. If a student uses a table or figure as a means of presenting his/her own words, then this is included in the word count.

Examiners will stop reading once the word limit has been reached, and work beyond this point will not be assessed. Checks of word counts will be carried out on submitted work, including any assignments or dissertations/business projects that appear to be clearly over-length. Checks may take place manually and/or with the aid of the word count provided via an electronic submission. Where a student has intentionally misrepresented their word count, the School may treat this as an offence under Section IV of the General Regulations of the University. Extreme cases may be viewed as dishonest practice under Section IV, 5 (a) (x) of the General Regulations.

Very occasionally it may be appropriate to present, in an appendix, material which does not properly belong in the main body of the assessment but which some students wish to provide for the sake of completeness. Any appendices will not have a role in the assessment – examiners are under no obligation to read appendices and they do not form part of the word count. Material that students wish to be assessed should always be included in the main body of the text.

Guidance on referencing can be found in the programme handbook and on DUO.

Paranormal Psychology : Ethnographic Research Paper

This paper is an exploration of a parapsychological topic. There are many parapsychological special
interest groups around the country. Some of these groups discuss ESP and outer-worldly experiences
while others may host ghost hunting tours, etc. You are to conduct your own ethnographic research into
one such group. I call it an ethnography because you are learning about people different from you. An
ethnography is the study and systematic recording of human experience. You are to interview with a
group or individual from one of these groups. I even welcome visiting one such club meeting or ghost
hunt. What you learn about these people and their experience may surprise you. If you are having
difficulty identifying a group or individual to interview, contact your instructor for guidance, should you
find this assignment problematic for any reason.
• The paper should include the following:
• Note you should include subheadings for all sections.
• An introduction including academic literature which explains this particular area of study.
• Introduction paragraph including a thesis statement
• Body including academic sources that explain the background of this area in parapsychology.
• Any academic literature which might help explain your particular community of interest.
• A paragraph which states your own beliefs (or bias if you do not feel comfortable sharing your
beliefs in a paper) and your relationship to the topic of study (Google “reflexivity statement” for
more information)
• Provide some short narrative or demographic detail about your interviewee(s). Avoid using
actual names or places. Use statements like “Ghost hunting group in a northeastern city.”
• Provide detailed information about the setting of the interview. Include pictures where possible
(be sure to request permission before taking pictures)
• Describe your research questions
• Provide the results of your interview and the interpretation of that interview.
• Discussion of the results and their overall impact on you, the researcher.
• What did you learn?
• What can you say about your interviewee’s worldview?
• How does this interview relate to the class material we have covered?
• Include pictures of your research participant (with their permission of course) or their meeting
space and include them in the appendix. Do not copy from a webpage (I will be checking).
Note all citations should include a short identification regarding the author and their credentials as an
expert. Webpages will not be accepted without an author’s qualifications. This should be attached after
your works cited page. Bubba’s Ghost hunting page is not a source unless you are interviewing Bubba.

Fallacies in Opposing Arguments

Choose an issue about which you have strong opinions. Find sources (articles, videos) arguing different sides of the issue; select two opposing viewpoints to analyze for the paper. In analyzing each viewpoint, list and explain logical fallacies in the arguments and what effect they have on the arguments.

Last, argue which viewpoint was a better constructed argument from a logical perspective.

Note: A personal argument on the topic is not needed. Instead, the argument presented will concern the quality of the viewpoints being analyzed.
