A letter to the editor can be a powerful outlet for voicing an opinion on health issues. The length of your letter should be 200-400 words in length. The objective of a letter to the editor is to increase understanding of an urgent public health problem, foster a dialogue around a specific issue involving the author and the community, and provide direction for future action on the issue. For this assignment, select a recent public health policy action at the local, state, or federal level. Prepare a response to the policy action in the form of a letter to the editor. Use the “Guidelines for Preparing a Letter to the Editor” resource and the following criteria to prepare your letter to the editor.

1. Clearly state your position. Articulate whether you agree or disagree with the chosen policy action (or inaction). Highlight the uniqueness of your opinion so that it is not simply restating the position or opinion in the chosen policy action (or inaction).
2. Critique the merits of the action. Describe the impact the action will have on health outcomes. Comment on what you would do differently (if you disagree with the action) or highlight why the course of action was appropriate (if you agree with the action). Critique whether the authors have used compelling data to support the action or challenge the action if you disagree. Describe whether the authors have identified criteria to measure the policy action or recommend what you would use as criteria.
3. Provide recommendations. Propose specific steps that should be taken to strengthen efforts. Offer one or two suggestions, maximum. Avoid statements such as “more funding needed” or “more research needed.”
4. Use an appropriate tone. Use professional language that focuses on the merits of the positions. Do not include language that is disparaging or condescending or includes content that is irrelevant to the argument.
5. Cite references. Include a minimum of one reference and no more than five references.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

The poem is William Wordsworth, [I wandered lonely as a cloud ]

ENG 102
Dr. Zhanshu Liu
Essay #2 Assignment Sheet
For this essay, you are required to analyze any poem(s) we have read and discussed in
class. Since the focus of the essay is on your own understanding and interpretation of the
poems, there is no need to refer to secondary sources for comments and criticism. Like
the previous essay, you need to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to use thesis and topic sentences to structure your writing
2. Pay attention to the analysis of the poetic elements of the work you choose to write
about and use quotations to back up your comment
3. Use appropriate literary terms whenever necessary to highlight the important literary
features in your analysis
4. Make at least two references to the poem for EACH poetic element you analyze
5. Follow the MLA format in using quotations and preparing works cited list
Your paper should be based on your response to one of the following questions.
1. A sonnet is a fourteen-line poem that follows a strict rhyme scheme. A Shakespearean
sonnet, also known as the English sonnet, consists of three quatrains (four line units) and
a couplet (two line unit), following a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg. Often a
problem or conflict is raised in the first three quatrains and is resolved in the couplet.
Analyze Shakespeare’s sonnet “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day” to see how
Shakespeare uses imagery, metaphor, and the speaker’s tone to urge the reader to
reconsider beauty, mortality, and eternity through art.
2. John Donne, a Metaphysical Poet, often relies on the use of very sophisticated and
thought provoking comparisons to convey his ideas and imagination. These extended
comparisons are also known as conceits, or analogies. How does Donne use some of his
most famous conceits in “The Flea” to allow the speaker build up the argument of
seduction?
3. “Carpe diem,” or “seize the day,” is a common theme in English poetry. Discuss how
the use of hyperbole, allusions, and metaphors in Andrew Marvell’s “The Flea” helps the
speaker vividly and persuasively convey such a yearning?
4. Dramatic monologue is a type of poetry in which a speaker addresses a silent auditor in
a dramatic situation narrated by the speaker. By reading the poem, the reader participates
as a third party, who can discern the speaker’s personality, flaws, and values through
carefully reading “between the lines.” Robert Browning, a 19th century British poet,
popularized the poetic form with some memorable poems, and “My Last Duchess is one
of them. Analyze the tone, choice of words, and the setting to show how the poem
reveals the true nature of the Duke: an arrogant, jealous, and cold-blooded murderer.
5. The theme of a poem is often implied rather than stated; therefore, the interpretation
of the theme or themes of a poem often requires the reader to closely examine other
elements in the poem: the speaker’s tone, the use of figurative language (metaphors in
particular), and the situation or setting. Analyze the setting, the use of metaphors, and the
changing tone of the speaker in Maxine Kumin’s “Woodchucks” and decide what theme
the poem conveys.
Guidelines for drafting the essay:
Title (center spaced with proper capitalization)
I. Introduction
A. Opening statement: You should start your essay with an interesting statement
that is attention grabbing and relevant to the story you are about to analyze.
For example, you could start your essay on “A&P,” and “Where…Where.” by
stating, “Young people are always fascinated and lured by the mysterious and
the unknown force lurking near what’s close to home…”
B. Follow the opening statement with your thesis that clearly introduces the
author, title of the work, the claim you make about the story, and the key literary
elements to be analyzed.
Steps and templates for developing the thesis statement:
Your thesis statement is the controlling idea of your essay; it introduces the author, the
work, and the key literary elements to be analyzed. More important, your thesis should
state your claim about the work you analyze: what you have to say and to prove about the
author’s work. Try to follow the following steps and the templates in formulating your
thesis statement:
Step 1: Choose the work, e.g., “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”
Step 2: Introduce the author, e.g., Mark Twain
Step 3: Highlight the literary elements to be analyzed.
E.g., point of view, setting, and irony
Step 4: State your claim.
E.g., Mark Twain uses a tall tale, a hallmark of his colloquial realist style, to
mock at the shrewd and cunning lifestyle of the Americans settling in the West
coast in the 19th century.
Step 5: Combine all parts of thesis in one sentence using templates.
E.g., A close analysis of the point of view, setting, and irony in the story “The
Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” makes it clear to see how
Mark Twain uses a tall tale, a hallmark of his colloquial realist style, to
mock at the shred and cunning lifestyle of the Americans settling in the
West coast in the 19th century.
II-IV. Body Paragraphs
Each of the three body paragraphs should start with a topic sentence that states the claim
that you want to prove and the literary element you analyze. For example, your topic
sentence can be, “The dark forest, the setting of the story where the main action of
murdering the entire family takes place, provides the gothic backdrop for O’Connor’s
deeply unsettling story.”
Each of the body paragraphs should follow the following steps:
A. Topic sentence
B. Sentence that explains the claim made in the topic sentence
C. Sentence that introduces the first quotation
D. Sentence that comments on the first quotation
E. Sentence that introduces the second quotation
F. Sentence that comments on the second quotation
G. Sentence that reaffirms the claim made in the topic sentence
Each body paragraph should include at least two text details in the form of wellintegrated
quotations from the story. All quotations must be introduced and cited
according to the MLA format.
You should use formal, analytical language and literary terms in your discussion of the
stories. Make sure you use appropriate literary terms when necessary. Key literary terms
we’ve learned include: point of view, plot, characters, theme, setting, symbolism, irony,
protagonist, antagonist, round character, flat character, first person narrator, limited
omniscient point of view, epiphany, realism, naturalism.
V. Conclusion
Recap, not repeat the purpose of your comparison. Choose slightly different expressions
to sum up why the attention to the points of comparison supports your understanding of
the stories.
VI. Works Cited
Prepare a list of works cited at the end of your essay according to the MLA format.

Who doesn’t want another excuse to watch Netflix (or iTunes/Amazon/Hulu/etc.)? Or maybe we’re totally sick of being in our homes!

This is an essay for my humanities class here are the instructions my professor gave me :

Who doesn’t want another excuse to watch Netflix (or iTunes/Amazon/Hulu/etc.)? Or maybe we’re totally sick of being in our homes! Either way, most museums and performance spaces are closed for the time being. For this reason our Final assignment for the semester will consist of a reflection essay on a film to be chosen from the list provided below. This is only a partial list of films that are influential due to their contributions to cinematography, story, dialogue, direction, music, editing, acting, and/or insight into the human condition. If you are interested in writing about another movie, contact me with your justification for approval (FYI, I rarely approve children’s movies). The movies on this list are available online to rent via iTunes, Amazon, or other online platforms for a nominal fee (usually around $3-4). Use the following criteria and guidelines to navigate this assignment and try to include as many of these criteria that are relevant to the film you select. Focus on the major themes of the film and how those themes impact the viewer. Make sure you upload it to the Final Essay Dropbox on the Corona Module page on Blackboard.

Criteria

RELEVANCE OF THE MOVIE
Relevance of the movie to our Course’s subject in general
Focus on the main themes
Relevance of the movie to specific area(s) or topic(s) of the Course

Were there specific scenes or occurrences which stood out as being essential to the development of the story and/or to your understanding of it?
Major substantive points of the movie?
Any secondary points made?
Any “unintentional” results of the movie?
SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT OF THE MOVIE/STORY
Any identifiable paradigms and theoretical perspectives in use in the movie?
Which issues emerged as the strongest (and potentially, the weakest)?
Was it more or less sociologically oriented? How so?
What specific humanistic/sociological analysis or concepts can be applied?
CONCLUSION
Overall impact of the movie?
Speculate about variety of impacts on others.
What did you learn, and/or how did it enhance your understanding?
What is your recommendation about the movie?
What would you suggest people keep in mind while viewing it?
Writing Guidelines

Your essay must be at least 700 words, and no longer than 900 total.
Times New Roman 12-point font
Black (not colored) text
Double-spaced
1-inch margins on each side
Be concise; don’t clutter your paper with meaningless “filler.” Stay on task with the items you decide to talk about. “Filler” will only lower your grade. Do not focus the majority of the paper on just the synopsis. This should be no more than a paragraph.
Do not copy phrases or content from the internet, or from any source you use for research. Your own ideas and reflections are the only ones of any value for this assignment. Think about what we’ve discussed this semester and link it with something you saw or heard, then turn it into your own statement. If you do happen to use the ideas of another, make sure you properly cite it using either MLA or APA style.
This assignment should NOT be written like a text message, Facebook post, or Twitter rant. Writing is a skill that takes practice. If you are writing in Microsoft Word, use the spell check. If writing has always been a challenge for you (or not), please contact the Kendall Campus Writing Center at 305-237-0677.
This report is an individual project. It should not be written with other students. Any papers that are plagiarized will be turned back to the student and an “F” grade will be given. Make sure to upload your paper to the dropbox within the Corona Module folder and read your originality report. If your paper is above 5% copied (excluding quotes) make the necessary changes before re-submitting it into the dropbox.

SCENARIO FOR WK 7

Consider the following scenario: Your city council has approved the placement of a toxic waste dump in a small, low-income community. The company building the dump has hosted informational meetings, but residents rarely attend and are unaware of the proposal. The approval will bring very little economic benefit to the community. The CEO of the company feels that, since no one attended the meetings, the approval is valid. Do you agree with the CEO’s claim? Why or why not? Consider the principle of social justice and include recommendations for what should have been done prior to the council meeting to ensure that the decision was ethical, fair, and valid. Describe two strategies you would implement to engage this community in advocacy for health equity.

YKC100[A] Concept Focus 4: Fallacies

Select the fallacy that best explains the error in reasoning. State in specific terms what is wrong with the argument. [Answers should blend concepts and details from the passage] [3 marks]

  1. My uncle stopped eating meat, and now he’s lecturing everyone to give it up. He cites all this stuff from medical journals and other scientific research showing the harmful long-term effects of eating red meat. But he ate red meat most of his life, so why should I listen to him?

  1. The Ford government has introduced harsh penalties for businesses that price gouge the public (charge significantly higher prices for certain products, e.g. hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes). But I need to charge more for these products because I need to pay my monthly Rogers “Ignite Internet” and Netflix bills. If I can’t keep up these payments, I will go insane while in self-isolation.

  1. BMWs are a pile a junk. I have two friends who drive BMWs, and both of them have had nothing but trouble from those cars
