Discussion 2: Ideological Perspectives Of Population-Specific Policy

Social workers often are very aware of and informed about the needs of the specific populations with which they work. As a result, it is important that social workers get involved in the policy-creation process by sharing their experiences and perspectives with others, including policymakers.

For this Discussion, select a population of particular interest to you. Then, select three to five policies (including two to three state-level and two to three federal-level policies) related to that population. Finally, subscribe to a variety of blog alerts concerning the population and the policies you selected. Note that you will be discussing about these policies throughout the course. You will also critically review the published opinions of bloggers outside of this course, who write about the policies you identified.

By Day 4 APA format using references below:

Discussion: Classifications Of Life-Span Development

When did you become an adult? Was it the day you graduated from high school? Or, was it the day you moved out of your parents’ or caregivers’ home? Your description of what it means to be an adult and how and when an adolescent transitions into adulthood may differ from that of your colleagues.

The authors of your course text, Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, & Hessenauer, use the term young and middle adulthood to identify the life-span time period between age 18 and 65. This classification distinguishes this time in the life of an individual from childhood and adolescence and from the later years of adulthood.

Is the authors’ young and middle adulthood classification a useful one? What is especially useful and not useful about the classification? What changes would you make to the authors’ classification to make it more applicable to your role as a social worker?

For this Discussion, you analyze the author’s life-span classification and suggest ways to improve it.

By Day 3  support your posts with specific references to the resources. If you are using additional articles, be sure to provide full APA-formatted citations for your references below:

Middle Adulthood Health, Demography, And Social Work Practice

A health crisis can occur at any phase in an individual’s life span. General health concerns, however, tend to increase with age. As a social worker, your awareness of the biological aspects of middle adulthood will inform your work with clients in this life-span phase.

In this Assignment, you address the health concerns that clients may face as they reach middle adulthood. You also address the potential impact of the environment on the health of individuals in this life-span phase.

By Day 7

Submit a 2- to 4-page paper that includes the following:

  • A description of the health concerns that clients may face as they reach middle adulthood
  • An analysis that explains how factors such as race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other demographic characteristics might impact at least three of the health concerns you identified
  • An explanation of how you, as a social worker, should take these potential health concerns and the environmental factors that influence them into account as you complete your assessments

File Upload: MODULE 5 Module Assignment #5 Objectives 1. Discuss attributes of a culture of wellness, including those that facilitate improving a

patient’s medication experience. 2. Identify behaviors and beliefs that promote safe medication-taking practices. 3. List actions that individuals, the scientific and medical community, and government

can take to address America’s drug-taking culture and the prescription drug misuse epidemic.

Directions In Module 5, we’re wrapping-up the course by shifting the conversation toward a culture of health. To do this, we’ll write a response paper to one of the following three TED talks:

1. “What makes us get sick? Look Upstream” by Dr. Rishi Manchanda 2. “How to connect with depressed friends” by Bill Bernat 3. “Addiction is a disease. We should treat it like one” by Michael Botticelli

Select and view the one TED talk that you find the most interesting (see ‘Resources’). Then, compose a response paper that reports your interpretation, analysis, and aesthetic response of/to the ideas presented within the TED talk. Consult the ‘What to Include’ section below for specific instructions. What to Include Compose a response paper that reports your interpretation, analysis, and aesthetic response of/to your selected TED talk by addressing the following three writing prompts: 1. Interpret the artistic work:

• In your opinion, what is the main message the presenter is trying to share? Support your response with a specific example from the TED talk.

2. Analyze and Evaluate: What is your analysis of the TED talk overall? Address both of these prompts to help construct your analysis:

• What is the main issue or problem the presenter is discussing? How does this issue/problem contribute to America’s drug-taking culture? Elaborate on your response with an example from the talk.

• Consider the solution the presenter proposes to address the main issue/problem they are discussing. If individuals or society implement this

solution, how would these actions contribute to a culture of wellness? Again, elaborate on your response with an example from the talk.

3. Develop an aesthetic response: • How did watching this TED talk make you feel? Elaborate on your response

by including a meaningful personal reflection that further explains your thoughts and feelings.

4. Format guidelines: Arial font size 11; single-spaced; 1” margins; Length: 1.5 pages maximum

5. Please cite the TED talk as well as any external sources, and include a reference list containing the full citation for each source following the end of your essay.

For this Discussion, you will create a research question related to quantitative or qualitative research in social psychology

Discussion: Research Design

Studies have found that seeking social connection online can result in users’ loss of social skills, damage to existing relationships, depression, anxiety, loneliness, and inability to interact meaningfully in face-to-face situations (Ahn & Shin, 2013; Cain, 2018; Chiou et al., 2015; Oberst et al., 2017). Some even argue that social media use is the newest form of addiction (Cha & Seo, 2018). However, not all researchers have reached the same conclusion.

That said, findings to date suggest excessive social media use looms as a potential real-world problem. Researchers want to know what motivates excessive social media use and, more importantly, what and how it may affect its consumers. Furthermore, researchers may want to know if excessive social media use is age- or gender-specific or if its use is preferred by certain personality types, educational achievement, race, or ethnicity. There are myriad ways to approach this topic, depending on what, specifically, the researcher wants to know.

For this Discussion, you will create a research question related to quantitative or qualitative research in social psychology as well as examine a research method appropriate for the question.

To Prepare
  • Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider the types of research questions for quantitative and qualitative research in social psychology as well as research design approaches based on the type of research question.
  • From the perspective of a social psychologist, consider what information you want to know about users’ motives for and the effects of excessive social media use.
  • Consider what research question would provide information relevant to what you want to know.
  • Because your research question determines the appropriate research method, think about the method best suited to address the research question, either quantitative (e.g., observational, correlational, experimental) or qualitative (e.g., phenomenological, case study).
  • Consider appropriate empirical support for the research method that you chose.
  • Make sure that your research question and research method align—in other words, make sure that the research method will answer your research question.
By Day 4

Post a research question that reflects a social psychologist’s interest in the motives for and effects of excessive social media use. Indicate the research methodology that best aligns with your research question and provide empirical support for the research method you have chosen.

Defining Normality: What Is It, And How Do You Know If You Are Normal?

normal distribution is not a naturally occurring phenomenon, but the assumption of normality is a basic premise for many statistical analyses. If your data is not normal, or approximately normal, certain statistical tests cannot be performed because the results obtained may not be valid. Researchers often go to great lengths to perform tests on their data to determine if their data approximates a normal distribution within certain parameters and reasonable limits.

So, what is normality and how would you define normality?

  1. First, do some research on your own and look up three different reputable sources that define normality from a statistical perspective and combine those definitions into one, reasonable, comprehensive definition of normality. You can use your textbook as one source, so you will need to find two additional sources that define normality from a statistical perspective.
  2. Second, justify your definition by using the sources of information you’ve identified to support your definition of normality. Why is your definition better and more comprehensive than what is currently used in many textbooks?
  3. Finally, find an aviation-related research article that uses the assumption of normality, describe and summarize that study and the analyses used, and explain why the analyses may not be valid if the distribution was not assumed to be normal.
