Community Teaching Experience Approval Form

Before presenting information to the community, seek approval from an agency administrator or representative using the “Community Teaching Experience Approval Form.” Submit this form as directed in the Community Teaching Experience Approval assignment drop box.

General Requirements

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

CO5: Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice. (POs #7 and 8)

The assignment is worth a total of 200 points.

Due Date

You are to submit your paper to the Week 6 Research Article Review Dropbox by Sunday 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 6.

Requirements

Through this assignment, the student will:

1.     Critique a peer-reviewed study, and in your own words, describe the research question, sample, design of study, data collection method, findings, and limitations of each. (CO 1, CO2,)

2.     Summarize the research article and evaluate the significance to nursing. Do not just quote the author’s words. Paraphrase the information. (CO 4, CO5).

Guidelines to writing the Paper

1.     Course Resources lists articles from which you are to select ONE to analyze.

2.     Retrieve the full-text version of the article from the library. Read it thoroughly. Introduction (one paragraph): The introduction should be interesting and capture the reader’s attention. Provide a brief description of the research article to be discussed.   Discuss the purpose of your paper. The purpose statement of the paper should relate to the research article reviewed and the implications that it has to evidence based nursing practice. You will need to summarize and analyze the information from the article in your own words

4.     Describe the research question for this study in a paragraph. Describe the research in greater detail. Include your observations about this question. Discuss events or trends that could have affected this question. You will need to summarize and analyze the information from the article in your own words

 

5.     Describe the research design of this study, and in your own words discuss the design.

a.     Discuss the research design of the study. 

b.     Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the type of design and hypothesize why the author                   utilized the design as opposed to others.

c.     You will need to summarize the information from the article in your own words

 

6.     Describe the sample.

a.     Briefly describe the sample size used for this study

b.     Make a judgment as to whether the sample size was adequate and defend your answer. 

c.     Describe the number or participants and determine if the number of participants was adequate compared to the research question and the intent of the study.

d.     Are these numbers adequate? Discuss gaps in that you identified.

e.     You will need to summarize and analyze the information from the article in your own words

 

7.     Describe the data collection method(s)’

a.     Who collected the data?

b.     What tools were used?

c.     What were the ethical considerations addressed and discuss gaps you identified.

d.     You will need to summarize and analyze the information from the article in your own words

 

8.     Describe the limitations of the study.

a.     Identify the limitations within the study

b.     Describe how the limitations could be overcome in subsequent studies

c.     Comment on why limitations are important to list and discuss within a study

d.     You will need to summarize and analyze the information from the article in your own words

 

9.     Describe the findings reported in the study.

a.     Describe the findings reported in the study

b.     Discuss whether the findings of the study answered the research question posed within the study

c.     Discuss the credibility of the findings

d.     If the findings do not support the research question posed within the study, what do you believe is the reason?

e.     You will need to summarize and analyze the information from the article in your own words

 

10.  Summary Summarize important points from the body of your paper including the key components of the paper. Include a statement about the research question and the findings. Discuss the probability of implementation into practice. Based on these findings, is the evidence that you found on your topic strong enough to suggest a change in practice, or an idea for practice? End with a concluding statement.

 

11.  Citations and References must be included to support the information within each topic area. Refer to the APA manual, Chapter 7, for examples of proper reference format. In-text citations are to be noted for all information contained in your paper that is not your original idea or thought. Ask yourself, “How do I know this?” and then cite the source.

Reference Page : The Reference Page should start on a new page (insert a page break). All references should be cited within the body of the paper as (Author, year) and the full reference should be included in APA format on the reference page. A url link alone is not an adequate reference. See the APA Guidelines in Course Resources for examples of properly formatted references.

An annotated bibliography begins the preliminary research process. The document will serve as an ongoing list of sources that will support your Final Research Paper. To fulfill the research component of this assignment, you must: Conduct several searches using any of the      databases in the Ashford University Library. Select at least five scholarly peer-reviewed sources      from your library search that support the topics and arguments you plan to      present in your Final Research Paper.

To fulfill the written component of this assignment, you must: Include a title page that is formatted in proper APA      style. List APA-style references in alphabetical order along      with your unique paragraph summaries. Annotation paragraphs must be        original and cannot be copied from abstracts or other summaries.        Copied-and-pasted annotations may receive a zero grade. Format your assignment according to APA style      as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Your annotated bibliography      should be double-spaced with one-inch margins and use 12-point Times New      Roman font.

Your annotations should contain  A complete summary, in your own words, of the      information presented in the article.  Your analysis of the best use of this information in      your paper, written in your own words. Identification of a possible topic sentence and/or      claim the information will support.

The bibliography must be 500 to 700 words in length and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

In Chapter 12, Wardle (2013) summarizes the important characteristics of a culturally relevant teacher. Use this information as a guide or resource throughout this assignment to help inspire your thinking as you apply your knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy toward specific solutions to problems facing a teacher with a very diverse student population. This exercise provides excellent practice over the application of culturally relevant principles in the design of effective instructional solutions. You will need to design such instructional solutions within the Final Project, so it is very important to practice such skills here. Specifically, for this assignment, you will view a brief video taken with a cell phone by a student in a high school social studies class. The video (Bliss, 2013) documents a meltdown Bliss experienced during his World History course at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas. A transcript of the audio is provided in the Instructor Guidance for this week along with other detailed assistance for completing this assignment.
 

After reviewing the Instructor Guidance for this task, create your assignment to meet the content and written communication expectations below.
 

Content Expectations Video Analysis Questions (2      points): Answer the questions below      based on your inferences and ideas after viewing the events captured in      the cellphone video. Description: What is the problem (from Jeff Bliss’s perspective as       well as from Ms. Phung’s perspective)?  Diagnosis: What probably caused it? Who benefits? Who loses?       What position do you take on this issue?  Solution: How could a more equitable, culturally relevant       approach to the class improve the situation? How might Ms. Phung respond       differently to Jeff’s concerns? Equity Strategies (2.5 points): Describe any equity strategies you noticed or inferred      being implemented in the video. Suggest at least one strategy for each of the four categories that the teacher could have utilized to help meet      student needs in a more equitable fashion. Instruction Classroom Environment Student Grouping Student Recognition/Leadership Culturally Relevant Strategies      (2.5 points): Describe evidence of any      culturally relevant pedagogy in action in the cellphone video and suggest at least three strategies that could be used to create a more      culturally relevant classroom. APA Formatting (.25 points): Format your paper according to APA style as outlined      in the Ashford Writing Center.
