Bert is 40 years old and works on an assembly line in a brush factory. He is terribly afraid of being contaminated by germs. He avoids shaking hands with others. He won’t eat in the cafeteria. He has trouble leaving the bathroom because he isn’t sure he has washed his hands well enough.
For vignettes, I would like you to do the following:
1. Review the many different mental health conditions on NAMI’s webstie: https://www.nami.org/learn-more/mental-health-conditions and select the one (or two) that you think matches the description best. Explain and justify your logic by quoting and citing NAMI’s information. While you cannot diagnose anyone, it is good practice to become familiar with some symptoms clients you’re working with might experience.
2. Create a short transcribed dialogue between you (the counselor) and Bert, and post in the same thread as your answer to number 1. For example, it should look something like this:
“C: “Hi Bert, What brings you in today?”
B: “I’m having a lot of trouble lately”
C: “Could you tell me more about what you’re having trouble with?”
….. and so on
The purpose of this is for you to start placing yourself in someone else’s shoes to imagine how one might be feeling/thinking if this were an actual case you were working with. You are not going to know exactly what to say, but the purpose of this is to use your skills, not have all the right answers. Please include (1) open-ended questions, (2) reflection of feeling, (3) active listening, (4) empathic responses, and any other counseling skills that might be helpful for Bert. Again, this is more of a chance for you to practice some skills without having the pressure of someone live in front of you.
