The Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) has conducted a survey of first-year college students at around 300 of the nation’s four-year universities since 1966. They found that in 1966, 80 percent of students noted that “developing a meaningful philosophy of life” was essential to their attendance. For that same year, only 44 percent cited “being well off financially” as their primary reason for attending college. However, more recent research from HERI has shown that as of 2012, 87.9 percent of student’s cited “to be able to get a better job” as their primary reason for attending college. Using your sociological perspective, analyze why this might be the case. Consider who is/was attending college as well as other general social trends at these different points in time. This work should be between 300 and 500 words.
