Conception of Self

THERE IS 2 PARTS TO THIS ASSIGNMENT
———————————————————————————————————————————-
1. Discussion:
– Read the attached PDF and answer the following question:
How does Ivanhoe define the psychological account of the self in Chapter 2? Do you agree that a psychological account of the self poses a real problem for conceiving of the self as residing within an individual body (see Ivanhoe 2017, 42)? Why or why not?

HERE ARE THE RULES FOR THE DISCUSSION
———————————————————————————————————————————-

DO
•Use phrases like “The way I understand it” or “From what I’ve read” to show other students that you are open to discussion;
•Include specific examples to support your opinion, especially when agreeing or disagreeing with someone else’s post;
•Make connections between the discussion topics and the assigned readings by referring to specific pages in the readings (e.g. Ivanhoe 2017, 4) when posting and when replying;
•Include thoughtful questions to show that you care what your fellow course participants think.
DON’T
•Copy material from other course participants’ posts–if you’re not sure what you can add, contact the instructor or Academic Advising for support;
•Post about things that are completely unrelated to the coursework, like your personal plans for the weekend;
•Insult or make fun of posts or use sarcasm. If you disagree with a post, then explain why in a constructive and empathetic manner, i.e. Remember the Human: if you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, then don’t say it online;
•Get involved in flame wars–especially not over issues of spelling, grammar, FAQs, and so on—if things do flame up, remember that you can stand by what you said and still apologize for the way in which you said it.

2. RESPONSE:
Reply: To a group member’s post by either agreeing or disagreeing with something in that post and provide at least one new reason for your agreement or disagreement in 200-400 words total. Based on what you read for the discussion!

MY GROUP MEMBERS RESPONSE:
The hypothesis of oneness supports the concept that the self is inseparably tangled with everything in the universe. Many religious and philosophical traditions hold this hypothesis since it gives a way of visualizing and attaining a broader concept of the self as linked to other people and organisms such as non-living things (Ivanhoe, 2017). Ivanhoe makes a brilliant point with regard to ethics, where he notes that the moral needed by the hypothesis of oneness ought not to be in favor of caring for others just for the sake of the other. Instead, a person with the awareness of self will bestow their attention to specific needs of cared-for people for the humane did to bring ultimate happiness and contentment to the agent.

This view presents a profound concern to western hyper-individualism that is mainly concerned with the concept of self-interest and the tendency toward self-centered actions. Although some western thinkers such as Aristotle were deeply concerned with moral self-cultivation, this was not a central theme for the western ethical traditions (Baxter et al., 2018). Western philosophers are mainly concerned more about trying to understand what is good, while people such as Ivanhoe focus instead on the concept of how to become good.

Another challenge relates to the definition of oneness. Ivanhoe refers to the oneness hypothesis as a type of metaphysical ethics similar to the neo-Platonic “chain of being,” and argues for its usefulness over the empathy-based moral (Baxter et al., 2018). The oneness hypothesis has an all-compassing commitment that allows the humane care of humans to extend to other non-human creatures and even more plants and inanimate stuff (Ivanhoe, 2017). However, while employing science to illustrate the compatibility of this claim using a more modern context, Ivanhoe hopes that people can draw up and use the neo-Confucian idea of this hypothesis as a guide and model to fashion an attractive and contemporary version and apply it as a resource to advance a conforming ethic.
