Critical analysis of “Cleaning: The Final Feminist Frontier” by Jessica Grose
Introduction
Many women within Africa grow everyday thinking and believing that the chores that
they have never ended. The author who is one of such women Jessica Grose has developed an
article text that highlights the plight of these women named “Cleaning: The Final Feminist
Frontier” this article was published in 2013 in the New Republic. The article clearly argues that
although most of the African man have started embracing helping with chores that include
cooking and taking care of the child the cleaning of the house and all other cleaning works fall
majorly on women.
Through the development of factual information, the author has managed to develop her
credibility through the use of reputable sources, accurate statistics, and critically applying the
emotional appeals to her audience. Although she managed to capture the emotions of her readers
in the first part of her article, she fails to do towards the end of the article, and she weakens her
credibility and her argument making the article appear vague.
Summary of the article
The first part of the article show the experiences of the author with her husband in their
house after they had closed it during the hurricane Sandy. She clearly outlines the unfair
distribution of the cleaning process of the house, she explains the situations and connects it to the
major issue of who does the cleaning in the house as a feminist issue. Through her article she has
managed to give a clear explanation of the reasons why men do not contribute to the cleaning
process of the house and other things, the cleaning mainly is left for the women (Grose).
According to her opinion in the article, the media has encouraged the man to take part
majorly in child caring and cooking but not in helping out with other chores such as cleaning.
This not being any interesting issue to discuss within the society, she has developed some great
suggestions on how to solve the problem.
The main solution that she suggested is that making a chart on who does the chores and
driving the chores based on the ability and skills different people. Another suggestion that she
gave is that men should start accepting dirtier jobs and making of the cleaning process more
enjoyable by developing and using machines (Grose).
On her article, Grose has used very strong and reputable sources that have helped her
develop a very strong argument which is credible. Some of the most common sources that she
has used include the famous sociologist Judith Treas and many other studies that have been
developed by institutions and professionals. In the process of citing reputable sources, she
managed to add credibility to her work (Grose).
The expert’s opinion is one that is highly valued, and her ability to be able to add this to
her work makes it even more appealing and acceptable to many readers. Grose has also used her
personal life experiences in developing her argument, and this shows that she has an opinion on
the issue and a good experience concerning the same argument.
In her attempt to increase her appeals on the issue she has used statistical facts and very
logical ideas, pointing out facts about her marriage concerning the distribution of cleaning work
within the house. She admits that although the split the midnight baby feelings and cooking in
the kitchen, he has never taken an initiative of cleaning the bathroom (Grose)
In addition to establishing creditability, author has used emotional appeals in the text in
the mid-section of article. For this purpose, she has tactfully opted those words that strikes to the
emotions of readers. Grose used words “she was eight month pregnant and her husband fought
with a pregnant person” reflects the man is attempting to quarrel with a woman who is not
medically fit and she is bearing a life in her.
Through this illustration she explains vulnerabilities of pregnant woman. Primary
purpose of Grose is to gain sympathies of readers for woman. Furthermore, in the selection of
words, she picked those words that are characterized by negativity for example “sucks, judged,
headachy, insisted etc.” (Grose). Though every word reflect negativity in its own way but the
word “judge” immediately stun audience that a woman can be judged merely for cleaning
chores.
Author of the article is well acquaint with her audience. Her primary audience is men and
society and secondary audience is women. Through unveiling hardships, challenges and
concerns of women, she wants to inform society about a painful subject. Grose intend to realize
audience that woman is not an inferior creature, therefore, do not limit her for the house chores.
A woman holds enormous abilities to prove her and her responsibilities should be in
accordance to her strengths. To bring this issue to the light which is apparently very casual hold
no meaning for men and society, keeps lots of meanings and value for women. It is matter of her
respect and prestige.
The argument by author is well established in the beginning but in the later part of the
article, her focus shifted from distribution of house chores to the house. This implies that she has
lost power of her convincing audience. It is apparent from the article that she had bad marriage;
therefore, problem is not merely distribution of work, it is something beyond this issue.
However, she is able to made it through use of humor and sarcasm, which lead readers
not to take the issue seriously at the end. Grose should end her article at some serious end so that
readers could depart with the article with an agreement that men should participate in house
chores.
The author Jessica Grose is concerned with the African women’s routine life of doing
house chores through her article “Cleaning: The Final Feminist Frontier”. She explain that trend
is bit changed with the passage of time and men taking part in house chores, however, main
responsibility falls over women. Author has tried her best to use emotional, ethical and logical
appeals in her essay, however, she is not succeed to end her article in solid convincing manner.

In addition to the rubric, my notes include one or two big things that I think you need to focus on:
I noticed that you changed your topic since you submitted exercise 6, so if you’re going to do that, you need to mention it to me. The Jessica Grose article is still an appropriate topic and I thought it was interesting that you didn’t find the author’s rhetorical appeals to be very effective.
One thing you could do to improve this paper would be to include some information about Grose. The assignment description calls for a paragraph or two about the author’s career and how that helps the author’s ethos, or credibility.
The analysis of the article is thoughtful, but could have benefited from more direct quotes. When you use a quote, explain how that quote is an example of the author using rhetorical appeals to logos, ethos, or pathos. Discuss the rhetorical situation, or the cultural and political context, of the piece.
