Data Extracting Paper

SCENARIO

Your facility is looking to improve the overall catheter-associated urinary track infection (CAUTI) rate within your organization. The facility has implemented an electronic medical record system that should allow you to mine the data and find the CAUTI rates for your particular facility and compare those to the CAUTI rates with other facilities.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are among the most common preventable causes of mortality in the United States and a significant economic burden to the health care system. Approximately a quarter of all hospitalized patients have a urinary catheter placed during their hospital stay, and CAUTIs are among the most common HAIs in the United States. Yet, the majority of CAUTI cases are preventable (AHRQ, 2013).
