Please use the attached essay and the professors notes, quoted below, to develop a thesis about the two plays and defend it throughout the essay. The two plays are Electra by Sophocles and The Libation Bearers by Oresteia.

Are urns symbols or actually a part of the funeral rites? In this regard, neither Clyemnestra nor Electra know that the urn supposedly carrying the remains of Orestes is empty. How does the Clytemnestra of Sophocles’ play compare with the Clytemnestra of Aeschylus’ LIBATION BEARERS? Is one more obviously wicked than the other? What of the two Electras. What do you think distinguishes one from the other? What is the nature of the duty that drives these different characters? In the cases of the two Clytemnestras are they equally driven by a sense of duty to avenge Iphigeneia? Where might the bond with Aegisthus fit into their different motivations? What do we hear from them and from other characters about this?

For each of these essays you will develop and argue a thesis that somehow relates these two plays together. In developing your thesis, choose one formal aspect or thematic issue or question as a point of focus. If you have difficulties developing a thesis, you might find that drawing up a schematic comparison/contrast of the two plays in terms of formal and or thematic elements may help you to define a workable thesis for your essay. Your essay should consist of a carefully constructed argument for your thesis in which you rely on textual evidence from the plays to make your case. Your thesis, in short, should propel you into a careful reading of the two plays treated.
